D14 overheating.

Been mowing with the D14 for a couple weeks now. 2 acres worth with a 6' finish mower. Been running great after a little tuning and leaks fixed.  Now I've got a new water temp gauge and has been running around 220-230*  was hitting hotter but played with the load fuel adjustment on the carb and got it to come down to there and remain constant. But despite anything else I did it still rides a little over the edge of the red.  It takes awhile to creep up there and doesn't fluctuate unless I sit still not under load at a high idle for a few minutes.  I've always heard these tractors run cool so this is bothering me a bit.  I've temped the radiator with a infared heat gun to check for blockages and have found none.  Any ideas?  I've flushed the cooling system twice and haven't really gotten anything nasty out or anything. so, is the 6' just too much?  it only runs about 10* cooler when just driving so can't imagine that's it.

Is the fan belt tight? Fan must turn full speed to pull enough air. Are you running full throttle? CFM of fan increases exponentially with rpm's. Is the thermostat new or been changed or checked? Could be corroded and not opening fully. With heat gun check the metal part of the rad. neck on top under load. Then check lower outlet back to water pump. You should have a drastic reduction in temp. if not then your not getting rid of heat though radiator. Then it would have to be plugged rad. or fan speed.
If you heat gun the water outlet right at the thermostat housing compare it to your new temp gauge reading. If it isn't the same then I'd add a secound temp gauge to check against the new replacement.
Yea, I can fix that.....

Timing on the 149 and 160 engine will help with heat. Need to be set to spec, if by ear it will overheat if off by much. HTH Tracy Martin

Worked hard the D14 was noted for heating problems. The D15 cured that. An uncle of mine bought a new D14 in 1960. He had this problem. Partially caused by pulling a 12 1/2 foot disk with 18" blades  but when he replaced the 4 blade fan with an aftermarket 5 blade fan the cooling problem went away. He was still underpowered for that disk but that wasn't the tractor's fault.

I have the 5 blade fan off the 60 too, maybe ill swap that out and see if it helps. Ill check the thermostat as well. What psi rating is the cap supposed to have? It doesnt seem to build as much pressure as i think it should. Thanks guys! Appriciate the help.

Mine likes to overheat too when worked, I never really dug into it, I just use D17 or something else.

Another thing is that the radiators sometimes get coated up with dust/chaff pulled thru by the fan and need to be washed and or blown out

Dad got a new 57 D 14 and they did a recall and replaced the 4 blade fan with a 5.  It would still get hot when pulling a big harrow . Uncle was a mechanic and he told him to use STP in it. Could pull same  harrow in 3th high and it would not get as hot as it did in 2nd high . Made dad a beliver in STP.

Steve it does overflow if I shut it off, once the pump stops pumping, almost instantly. I've been letting it sit at high idle for a couple minutes til the temp comes down.  It has blown off while moving before I adjusted the carb.  If i make it any more rich it starts stalling out.   I'll throw the 5 blade on and try to clean the radiator, grab a new thermostat before I mow again and see what I get.  Maybe a new cap too.  I've never used the STP stuff but had decent luck with the redline brand in cars before.  Thanks again!
