Almost pulling time.....come on already!!!! Man! It took months
to design and build, but I finally built a V-8 within the casting of the stock
straight 4 cylinder. Edited by deereequipment1 - 01 Apr 2012 at 7:04am |

Chris, that is a pair of 45 engines end to end, I've seen it in person, a nice piece of engineering.

I can't give away too many of my secrets yet.
I think some of my competition reads on this forum. Its the exact same outside casting as the 226 45 block. The insides are totally different. A couple of "true" Allis guys have been by to look the tractor over, and when I asked them if they could tell me what I did to the engine, they couldn't tell the "real" change. One guessed that I switched things over to Electronic Ignition. Well, yes, that had happened too, so I told him, yup, that's it. The distributor has a special high output coil, and each spark plug wire is split at the spark plug end, to maintain it's OEM 4 cylinder appearance. There are these avaiation splitters that delay the ohms a split second, to delay the spark timing on the opposite side of the block. Looking at the block, you can't tell that it is now a V-8. That was the whole idea with this project. The boring and degree work took quite a while to get right, but with the help of two BS engineers, it runs smooth, and has held oil pressure (and together) for 26 hours so far. We haven't put it under a working load yet, all except for the dyno.
Rather than the stock 45 hp, we dyno'd it at 110 hp. Definitely had to convert it over to 12 volt, because the compression is SUPER tight. We also fabricated a 1" adapter plate, to bolt to the oil pan to lower it a bit, but not to make it obvious. This gave us teh needed clearance on the inside for rotations, and for the specially designed oil pump. We had to tweek the muffler (ALOT) to try to hide the different sound. The only thing that isn't working, and is just there for looks, is the updraft carburetor. The 2 barrel unit is up under the hood, behind the air cleaner (out of sight, out of mind). The only thing that we are having trouble with, is keeping the RPMs down to what the stock block/engine should have. |

Interesting. You'll be pulling in a class by yourself it sounds like. Any Antique club that has a good tech inspector will determine something is up by the different exhaust sound and the 1inch thick girdle plate, let alone the fact the carb doesn't do anything and the governor doesn't work. Better keep corn picker side shields on it to hide things. Sounds like quite a project and hope it stays in one piece for you. The HP of 110 has been met many times by other Antique Pullers that have bored and stroked to 400 cubes or more with 4 cylinders.

carburetor upgrades, room for larger sleeves, cam work,
head work, Are ALL still in the plans, once all is tested. |

With a three inch bore on eight cylinders and stock 4 1/2 inch stroke that figures 254 cubes, right??
