Has anyone ever rebuilt the power steering front support on a D17? something gave up in the front support and I was wondering if I should attempt to rebuild it myself.

Basically the ram side is just like a hydraulic ram with a gear rack on the right side and a hydraulic motor on the other side. Not real complicated in my opinion. The hard part is getting at it on the tractor, as it is all contained in the front casting.

I'm betting it's the pin in the rack to piston. You can fix it without removing the hole unit.

Also if you do tear it apart, you will need new vellum gaskets/spacers.

I had problems on the photo upload but that is the tractor with the steering problem. It became mine when my son died in a hunting accident. I have had no experiences with tractors till now and I am appreciating all of the information everyone is giving. I'm trying to get it into shape and will keep it in memory of Jason. In the background is the other tractor, a Ford 3000. I know very little about it also but will tackle that project after this one. It's good to know that I have people out there that know everything about tractors! THANKS!!!!!

Well, I attempted the front support removal yasterday. everything went well. I came across the problem while disassembling. Now I need to know if anyone knows where I can find this and what is it called. It connects to the spline shaft on the bottom of the front support and hooks to the tie rods. No part number on it.

You can view the AGCO parts books as a "guest". I'm pretty sure www.agcopartsbooks.com is the web address. You can see expanded views of all parts of the tractor. Talking to Sandy Lake Imp (one of the sponsors here) will help too. They will be able to set you up with just about any part you will need.

Is it the part that has the splines in it and the two holes for the tie rods and fits over the
splined shaft that comes out of the front support? Steering arm #70250639. Old parts books show 229062. Did it break or are the splines gone? I have a couple of parts tractors that should have one. Out checking.....Dale

Thanks for that info!!!!! I'll check out that number!! That's the part I'm speeking of and it 's broken not stripped out. The spline on the front support seems to be fine. Let me know if you fine one. Has anyone ever have this problem or is it rare to have that happen?

I'm not there looking at it, but it's pretty simple.....if it doesn't hold up, what are you out???? you'll still need to get a different one. I can't imagine not being able to weld it I guess, off the tractor, (not on the tractor) where you can clean it and roll it around to weld it good.
