Hello All,
I went out and got the serial number off the D17 today.

d17-12651-M

does this make sense?  I was afraid to scrub to much more
for fear of losing any additional letters or numbers.
Thanks Jeff

I shouldn't have posted so fast. Is that an engine # or a tractor #? I really don't know anything about the new stuff.

I found it. S is low octane and M is gasoline, it's an engine # so I don't know what year it is.

I'm guessing the tractor number will be somewhere around D-17 18000 making it an early '59 Series I tractor. It will probably have the early style oil filter as used on the WDs and WD-45s. The color should be Persian Orange #1 and the rear wheel centers are probably orange rather than cream.
I used the difference between your engine number D-17 12651 and my engine number
17-29111 (16460 units) and subtracted that number from my tractor number D-17 34633 to come up with an estimated tractor number of D-17 18173.
There is not a direct correlation because there were engines built for combines and stationary units that were included in the same series of engine serial numbers.
I hope you post your tractor number when you locate it just to see how close I came.

As already stated, that number is the engine serial number found on the left rear side of the engine block somewhat behind the carb.  M-code is a 7.25:1 compression ratio gas engine.  If the code was "Z" it would be 8:1 compression...don't have my Swinford book but I think "V" code was the 8:25:1 compression gas engine such as found in the 175.  Mike
