   Hi all, I'm in the process of restoring my English B, I've had the crank ground by .20 thou and got all new bearings. I got the mains set up easy enough, but the big ends are very tight, to save me a lot of messing about and trial and error, could anyone be able to tell me what thickness of shims should be needed?

	Trial and error while using plastigage is the most common way because of the absents of measuring instruments. You can measure the inside diameter of the main bearings installed in the block before you install the crankshaft. Subtract that from the crankshaft diameter and add .002. That will give you the thickness of shims needed on both sides of the caps. To check to see if filing of the bearing inserts is needed I bolt a insert set in two caps and do the same. They may or may not need filed. After all the measuring plastigage is still needed to double check your measurements. The only short cuts that I know of that [works] is to take it to an engine repair shop.

	When I overhauled my CA (same engine), I had to have my block line bored. When the machine shop did the work, they eliminated the shims altogether. If I remember correctly, the shim packs have 5 layers in them originally.

	factory i think is .006 inch of shims. thats 3 of a .002 shim. if you ground 20 under the factory spec and had 20 under bearings, you might start at .006 shim ?????

	I bolted all caps up without bearings or shims and measured several directions. I then shimmed until the vertical measurement was .001 or so less than what was called for. I then lightly honed the bore, making sure not to go oversize.
