the cross member that runs between the frame rails at the bottom front of the wc engine has thin shims between the cross member and where it attaches to the engine. whats the purpose of these shims? i didn't see anything on it in my manuals, altho i may have missed it......thanks alan

This is what the service manual says about it:
With engine bolted tightly to clutch housing, tighten front support to side frames only. Place as many shims as possible between front support and timing gear case. Loosen frame bolts, install shims adding one .005" shim to amount previously determined. A loose front support causes excessive vibration and noise. The incorrect amount of shims between support and engine places an excessive strain on the cylinder block and clutch housing. |

I made shims from shim stock when I put my WC back together, I don't remember now how many shims it took though, that would be six years ago I think. I remembered this step though when I saw your post.
