I own a 720D, which is the same as the 730 minus the tinwork. 730 Will outpull the d17, not even an equal comparison there. D17 would be better on the pto

With a mounted plow the D17 will out work a 720/730. D17 is also handier to drive but I don't know how the engines compare for reliability. I think the 720/730 might have a better engine other than the 17 will out lug it. That I know for a fact.

I know a guy that has a D-17 III, and a 720 (but both are gas) and the D-17 will run circles around the 720 according to him.  I would imagine he is probably correct.  I kinda like the way the 2 cylinder diesels sound, but I will never get used to that clumsy hand clutch.

I have never plowed with a D17 Diesel. I grew up with a 720 diesel and also a couple of 730 Diesels and also a gas D17. Those 2 cyl. Diesels can really pull! I would have to vote that the JD would out pull any D17. But the D17 is a much handier tractor to use for baling work or any lighter job.

so for everyday use the D17 is best but for plowing or disking I would side with the 730.
Unless your are the lead horse the scenery never changes!!

I've showed up more than one big 2 banger pulling my 4x14 fully mounted plow in hard dry Alfalfa sod with my brother's bone stock D17 and at 9" deep. Also 880 Ollies too. Was really fun and had a great time even with the Deere and Ollie guys who didn't seem to mind the old D17 doing so good.

Happen to own both, a 720 diesel my grandpa bought, and I bought when he died, also have a D-17 diesel and gas, and even though the 720 physically is much bigger, has a bigger engine, larger tires it is easily out worked by both 17's no comparison. The only advantage the 720 has is if your pulling a big load slow than the weight of the 720  works in its advantage, but field wise it embarassing to have them in the field together, well not for me I am an Allis Chalmers man.

Remember pulling 3/16s with a 730 propane. surprised me how much I had to work the lift to keep from spinning (no traction booster and not new tires). And yes I would take my D17s hand clutch any day over a Deere.

This reminds me of the a joke that was alive when I was young.  It compared a John Deere A to a Farmall M (you could easily substitute a WD45 for the Farmall M).  The joke went that if a Farmall M owner mentioned the amount of gas he would use in a day, the Deere owner would faint because it was so much more than he used.  When he would come to and the Farmall M owner would then tell him how many acres he had gotten plowed, the Deere owner would faint again!!

The 720's and 730's had another 5-6 hp (supposedly), but they did more "conniving" at Nebraska than the other major lines ever did.

I was discing with the WD45D and my dad shows up with a 720D.  We put it on the disc and man did that thing pull the disc like it wasn't there. Problem was 2 hours later we couldn't see any oil on the dipstick.  That one went back to the dealer.  We did find 2 more 720D's and a 730 over the years and they did pull well in our heavy soil.  We never had a D17D to compare them too, but I would sure take them over the WD45 diesels....then we got the 2-85 White and it was hard to go back to any of those other tractors.
