Has anyone ever used the 5/8 in. dowels to hold the lifters up when pulling the cam on a 301 diesel ? I need to change the front plate for a different style injection pump and the book says to do this with the dowels , but I,ve never done it this way , the motors in and aint coming out ; any pointers or hints to this procedure ?

I'm pretty sure I've heard that you stuff the dowels in the lifters where the push rods were. Pull them up all the way and put rubber bands around each pair of dowels to keep them up.

I think you want 3/8 dowl. Slit the bottom of dowl and screw a small wood screw in them to spred to right size for lifter then use close pins to hold them up. MACK

Yep, done the dowels before. Worked pretty good. Had a friend buy a bunch of those extendable magnets to do an IH engine, also worked well.

Is this the original 180 engine? If so,it probably has a cam driven oil pump.I find it easier to roll the front end out ,leave the engine hanging on torque tube, remove pan and pump, then use the dowel sticks. There is not much left holding the engine at that point,so sometimes I just remove it,take the clutch off, then set the engine down on the flywheel.Good time to look at clutch, crank bearings, and no need for the sticks.
