well i notice on the bottum of the reg that it is suppose to do either neg or pos ground but when i connect everything back up as before there were spraks inside the gen. before i go any further this isnt a gas. there was nothing wrong with the old regulator except that the mounts were rotted off and it was being held in place by zip ties. there is only 3 wires going to this reg and i have them wired the same as befre. do i switch two wires??
thanks rob

Sure sounds like you have a live wire going to the gen which should not be hot until the reg closes. Either a wire is crossed, shorted or the reg is faulty. Bill

well to further update on this my father went this afternoon to get the tractor out of the shed to put on the cornplanter. when he got there he noticed that i had left the key on but this time the batteries were dead. in the past the key could be left on and there was never a problem. well it sounds like i have a live wire like u mentioned bill. i noticed that this new reg doesnt have any markings on the terminals. the old one didnt have any either so thats why i wired it the same

If you left the key on and your battery is dead, you probably need new points. After getting all the wires in the right place, your generator should be polarized before turning the engine over or you will let the smoke out of the generator and you can't put it back in.

The regulator case has to be grounded for the regulator to work.

Sounds like the cutout relay in the regulator is stuck.

Not all VR's are the same. Terminals vary in their positions on occasions per mfr. Be careful on what your hooking up. Most that I've seen or carry in stock are marked to eliminate a wiring problem or have a little instruction sheet enclosed in the box... HTH
