Hey everyone,

We were finally able to get the tractor out of the ditch it was sitting in for over 10 years.  Here is a video I have put together from all the clips we took.  It is the first I've ever used a video editor so it has cheezy effects.

How did you get it in there in the first place? It appeared to be hooked up to something?

No need to take the wheel off just yet.  If the brake is stuck, then the band is accessible by taking off the brake cover on top of the driveline.  Cover is about 5" wide x 9" long, and has a hump in the middle, under where your feet would rest if you pulled your legs back off the pedles directly below the seat.  Take that cover offf, and soak it with brake cleaner, and tap on the parts a bit.  will eventually come loose unless something elsewhere is froze up.

I went back and watched the video again, and I am not sure the brakes aren't locked on, it doesn't apear that the brake pedles are in the released position like they should be, but I couldn't really see well.  There is a cam inside the frame that holds the brakes on, when pulled into place, just double check that.

From the 1:56 to 2:00 there was a critter moving in the trees. What was that?

Ohh. I just heard a rooster. That must have been what I saw.

ON the initial pull from the Tahoe I seen the rt wheel roll a bit then stop, like it was in gear with clutches not released.Would make sure trans is in neutral then it should roll irregaurdless, however,if there is water in trans/rearend it may be frozen causing "locked" situation. You could pull the rear plate off the back of differential housing to get a better ideal what is free and what is not.Since it's been setting out for so long the back end may be full of water and have rusted/froze internal parts.Trans and differential share housing/lube(water?).You can pull the shift tower off the top of tranny for a look inside too.

I will give you an A+, for perseverance. After that anything you do should be easy. Good to see the family involved, and appear to be enjoying it. When it's running you'll need to share seat time with them. Good luck with the tractor. Lanny   Mid TN

In the video you said you were going to take the wheel off to look at the brake. No need to take the wheel off. It won't help get at the brake. Take the brake cover off just inside the fender on the top of the differential housing.2 bolts and you can see the brake mechanism.
I guess I miassed Orange Bloods reply about the brake cover.

I did that, sorta, with my D14.  I just went and got my friends Farmall M and pulled it out.  Sure was a lot easier than what you went thru, but then I was by myself and you got to make it an entire family event.   If you want to get rid of that loader, let me know!

Hey everyone,

I will pull of the plates and see what is going on with the brakes and double the tranny to make sure it is not locked.

Secondly I think there is some confusion from this video.  The big guy in the red and black flannel shirt is my boss Paul and the kid is his son Charlie.  I make a brief appearance early on while we were unwinding the winch.  I was behind the camera for most of the clips and the girl at the end is my girlfriend Lori.

Might just find the shifter slipped out of rails and locked trany in two gears. Might be why someone left it . Pull the shift lever out of tower and allign the rail with long screwdriver or bar.

Lonn,

Yes it was one of our roosters.  Some chickens got left behind from the previous owner.  Had 5 and 3 left so we are down to 2 roosters.

After setting out for 10yrs it may have water in the tranny, brakes, rear end that is now frozen into a giant icecube. And after 10yrs I would bet the engine is full of water too!!!

PS: late thought the pin in the rear than holds the spider gears may have dropped and is catching on the case, happened to me...

I think Coke is onto something being stuck in two gears... there is a reason it was left there. Had to do that little repair more than once. It looks to have a lot of potential, wish I was closer to help! I have had my 45 in pieces from front to back. learned a lot doing it.

You can start by jacking up one side of the rear end now and seeing if the tires spins.   If the brakes are locked up that could be a possibility.   I had a WD once that a brake was locked.   Used a chain hoist to get it on a trailer.   Not fun.   Take the cover off like everyone said.   You will see a nut on the top.   Back it off 10-15 turns, which will loosen the adjustment up.   Just keep count and you can adjust it back once it is running.   If I were you, drain all the fluids on it, in the rear end.   Three drain plugs if I remember right.   Put a large pail underneath each one and let them drain into them.   If it warms up during the day, ice may melt out of there as well.

that young man standing and holding a taut cable with that much tension on it was not too smart.if the cable snapped it could have been instant death.that winch had to have had at least a 100:1 gear reduction or better...

I bought a WD once that the guy told me that the rear end was stuck up. I started to winch it onto my trailer & the wheels slid. I loosened the adjusting screws behind the brakes in the rear end housing and it broke right loose. I've also had them hang up in two gears & they won't move. had to pull shifter & line up shifter rails in neutral with a screw driver. the worst cenerio I've had is the double pinion bearing between the transmission & rear end went out & it locked every thing up tight. Now thats a major job of removing transmission gears & rear end bull gear. good luck.

Glad to see you finally got it up where you can work on it. I would check for locked brakes by backing off the adjuster nuts as has already been stated. That would be easiest, followed by pulling the shifter and checking the shift rails. Does the shifter move into all of the gear positions, or is it stuck? That would be a good indication.
Glad to see you have a lovely young lady who doesn't mind helping you do the dirty jobs. If she stays with you through getting that thing running and driving, she's a keeper! LOL! Good luck, and keep us posted.

Most of the questions posted, were already answered in Sagar's previous thread.

You get my applause for the successful extraction, but I'll HAVE to step on the box and give you a stern warning here...

When a cable breaks, that's a warning sign you SHOULD NEVER ignore.

Draft cables are incredibly dangerous when broken... especially long ones.  Why?  Because they're elastic, and have considerable mass.

Whenever using draft cable, ALWAYS lay blankets, jackets, or large segments of wood or log-chains over them at regular intervals to keep the cable from whipping out and cutting you in half.  They WILL.

Next- never use a draft cable of a length longer than absolutely necessary for extraction.  If you can reach it with 8' of cable, don't move the winching point 40' away, because you're allowing a longer segment of elastic material.  At a given load, if it stretches 1/8" per foot, at 8', that's one inch of stored energy.  At 80', that's 10 inches... an impressive amount of jump with that much stretch.

Next, when a cable breaks, it's because you're asking more of it, than it can safely handle.  This means double up the cable, or triple it... or more.  You should never find yourself in a situation where an extraction move should bring a cable within 1/6th of it's yield strength... ever.

I WILL give you great respect for wrapping the cable around the tractor, and then clamping it.  Many times, people use extraction rigging that, when failure occurs, will send broken hooks, clevises, etc., through the air at Mach 1.  When one of those fragments hits a person, it passes through with essentially no change in velocity, and leaving behind a very gory, and terminal result.

In my opinion, there is no better, or safer method for extracting a tractor, than using a similar or larger-sized tractor with a 3-point hitch.  Use the hitch system to LIFT the drive wheels of the incapacitated machine, even partially, and then roll it out on it's front wheels.

And next time- remove the wheel weights.  Wheel weights and other ballast give the tractor an incredible amount of grip on the ground... whether it be for pulling a load, or lifting something in the loader... or keeping you from dragging it up out of a 5' deep gully.  Once knocked loose, they can easily be chained to the back of the tahoe and dragged out somewhere to safety.
