hi, i have a 1941 ac wc and im thinkin of putting a sherman overdrive in it. i have around 80-90 hp and im wondering if anyone could tell me if it will hold up to that kind of power? my intention is to put it in to gain a gear between my 1 and 2 gears now. any ideas or info is greatly appreciated. thanks, rob.

Welcome Rob I would think your just fine if your only using it to pull. There is a lot
of little Fords out there running Shermans with the Flathead V8. What's the heaviest
class you pull in?

do you have an overdrive or an underdrive?? makes a big difference. Other than that, start writing checks

I think so until you start making lots of power, the you can run the over and the engine will have enough snot to lug along and keep going

ok thanks larry. just to make sure i understand the underdrive would give me a 20-25 % reduction on each gear when engaged?

Not related to the Sherman but I'm just curious what kind of rules you guys have in New York? I had my WC tractor and some parts for unlimeted RPM engine, fabricated manifolds, aviation carbs, etc. for sale several years agoe (never sold the tractor though) and there was a lot of intrest from New York and Maine and some Canadian intrest.
I was down to Jamison Equipment in Emetsburg Ia. a while agoe and Jon, the owner had some Allis items for sale. I don't rember though if he had a complete overdrive or underdrive unit or if it was just parts for one. He had some items that I bought and lots more that he wanted to clean out. If I talk to him in the near future I'll try and rember to ask. Edited by wi50 - 04 Mar 2011 at 6:15pm |

I run an overdrive. Its about a 25% step up. It takes ALOT of power to lug that baby in 1st high at 4mph and 10% over with 14.9 38's. It would be the cats ass with 16.9 28's and some good power.

wi50, ive only been involved in antique pulling for a few years here in new york and the rules in most clubs try to shadow national rules. that being said ive been to several pulls here where the only thing guys look at is your tires. cut or uncut and that is the extent of there inspection. its pretty sad in a way because i like to be competitive and it can be hard when you have division 3 tractors with division 2 tractors and the alike. still a ton of fun though! but yeah please let me know if you find any sherman complete underdrive units. thank you

My dad used to run one in his hopped up WC that was puttin out about the same horsepower as yours. He had to have kind of a latch to hold in whatever side he wanted it in, because it would pop out on occasion. He was running 18.4 28's on his and then one day the thing finally gave out and that was the end of that. Not sure what happened to it, but he just went back to the stock rearend. It may be a good idea, but it most likely is not going to hold up, but maybe you will get lucky.
