7010 Hi - Low lever

   I looked at a 7010 power director today that is for sale near me. It was a very clean nice machine. The only problem I could find was the Hi - Low lever on the far right, next to the cab wall, shifted VERY hard. The seller said it is probably the cable. Could this be a more serious problem?
He came down to $9,000.00 and the tractor has about 5,300 hours. What is the most a 7010 could be worth. What did a 7010 sell for new? Any insight would be apprieciated.

	It can be the cable, they do go bad over time. The only real way to tell is to unhook both ends and see how stiff it is. If that one is going out, be prepared for the clutch cable to go next, and depending on the remote hydro use, those can go to, but ge the new AGCO cables, they are a lot better these days, much more resistant to dirt and moisture. 9K seems really high for a 7010, depending on the year and condition. Most dealers think the 7000 series tractors are worth 9K - 15K, but on the private party or auction block market, I would think 5500 to 7000 for a really nice one with low hours. 5300 hours is getting up there, but nothing to worry about if it has been taken care of. 	It can definitely be the cable. My 7060 shifted from high/low to park very well in the summer, but now that it is cold it doesnt like park. Changing/lubing the cable is on my list whenever it thaws out. Its hard to believe how much easier one shifts/clutches after the the cables have been swapped out. I think 9k is high for this part of the world also.

	My friend Donald bought his 7010 2years old .a couple of years ago and with over 10000 hours he had the allis / aco dealer rebuild it. front to rear. every seal that leaked, power shift loked over. All allis parts in the motor. new turbo. new cab kit, seat,gaudges, had a high end paint job. new radial tires. Over $22,000 later. Now It's his pride and Joy again. 	If it is nice shape, I don't think 9 grand is out of line. It is towards the high end of the spectrum, but should be a very good all around tractor with good fuel economy. Just my opinion though, Darrel

	we've had them around since they were new. i have 2 7020's now. only problem i've seen is the 301's have warped heads. don't let them talk u into new or rebuilt ones without taking them to your machinest. the last 3, all i've had to do is have them planed. just watch how far and you won't even need to reheight the valve's.

	I also would think that $6-7K should be able to buy a 7010 with 5300hrs. The current problems associated with the used farm equipment prices is the higher price of scrap iron & high dollar commodities - $7 corn & $14 beans. There is a sqeeze coulper inside the console that my 7060 needed repaired. It had 2 bolts, one had snapped & the other backed out some. Easy repair, but hard to get to. I also replaced the T-handle shift cable. Same kind of repair. Another item to watch - I would check the cab air conditioning. On a 1979-80 model, you might want to figure replacing the compressor & condensor because of the decades of vibrations on the system. AP air inc in Iowa carries this replacement kit http://www.apairinc.com/detail.asp?part=990-005. I put one of these on my 7060 & was glad I did. I don't remember what I had in it on cost, but you should probably call for current pricing anyway. I think I also had to put a new condenser in front of the radiator. It had a leak in its fittings. When I tried to correct it, the whole fitting twisted off - so had to get new. Good luck - You can always make an offer?

	I failed to mention that the squeeze coupler in my last post was on the high/low cable.

	I don't think 9000 is that bad if it's in good shape. I've seen them go higher than that.
