Begining a D17 restoration

Well I thought it was time to start my 2nd restoration.  The first was a 45 way way back in middle school for 4-H, I did a pretty good ~95% restore for a kid.  Now that Dad's getting out of farming, and I am stuck in the city, I am getting the bug to do a full 100% nut and bolt true authentic restore.  What I am wondering is where do you find the details about what was orriginal/factory on the different series say for things like guage faces, and decals?  I have ordered C.H. Wendell's book, I hear it is full of good stuff.  Any other ideas? 
 
I know the later model tractors really well, wrenched on them for years, but the older stuff, didn't need much work, and didn't get worked as much, and while the wrenchin is easy, I just don't know where to find out the details about correct vs. incorrect parts.
 
Also 2nd question.  My manifold has the threads in the exhaust outlet, what was this used for, I have never seen a threaded muffler, is this correct for a series III, or was it suppose to be smooth bore?

Don't know when,but last 17's had pipe screwed in manifold and the muffler sliped on with a clamp.I think it started with the quieter oval style but don't know.

Series III & IV D17 had a the exhaust manifolds with a screw in stub pipe.  The oval mufflers with slit sided inlet pipes slid over the manifold stub pipe and were held on by a muffler clamp.   Mike

Srries II 24001 and up or 32000 and up. My 1961 had the larger ROUND muffler. That used a treaded pipe 1.5" , use a black gas line pipe to screw into the manifold. It won't rust and break like the galvinized one. Get one long enough to cut in half. You want no threads in the muffler opening. Also use a die grinder to keep the opening free from opstuction. once you find out what year it is, look on ebay for the dealers sales brocher. there will be very valuable pics and info. And it would be cool to display it next to your perfectly restored D-17

Thanks, the sales brochure is a great idea.  BTW its s/n 40184 which makes it a '62 or '63 depending on which serial number reference you look at.  I am currently under the impression it is a '62 model Series III.  Are there any other physical differences that tell you which series it is?

Anthony - Series III started wtih SN42001.  If your SN is 40184 it would be a late "Series II" which is an unofficial designation.   Here's a couple items that will clearly identify if your tractor is a Series II or III:

* Series II had headlights mounted to the front radiator shell, Series III had fender mounted headlights
* Series II had the hydraulic fill cap on the right side of the torque tube near the belt pulley plate.  Series III combined the hydraulic and power director compartments and used the single oil fill dipstick to the front left of the gearshift.  The oil fill on the right of the torque tube was eliminated.
* Series II had no hydraulic filter.  Series III had a 2nd hydraulic filter on the right side of the tractor under the gas tank.

It is not uncommon for someone to have repainted an earlier Series I or II D17 and used D17 Series III or IV decals on the hoods.

Dseries4's panel is as near factory as you can get, besides finding NOS. Good luck.

Hey Lanny, are you saying it should have the polished steel behind the guages?  Mine didn't, my 19 doesn't eigther, and haven't looked at the 17 diesel?

Also series II have a oil bath  air cleaner, Series IIIs and Ivs have a dry air clearner above the engine.

Isn't there a book out there called "Original Allis-Chalmers" or something like that? Seems like maybe what I'm thinking of was a co-operative effort by maybe Guy Fay and Larry Swenson?

Brian, you are right, but that book's title says it ends in '57, so I don't know if it would help me or not?

Orange Blood, these panels were used on most (if not all) D15s, D17s, and D19s.  Originally, they were turnings on a piece of aluminum.  However, they do not stand up very well over time.  So I started making mine out of brushed stainless steel - always looks good.
 
As Lanny said, you cannot get the original pieces anywhere - I looked everywhere too until I learned how to make mine with the turnings.  Like you, I wanted the tractor to look as close to stock as possible.

My Dad bought a new D-15 in the spring of 1961(the first one the local dealer got delivered to him), that had the panel. My sons have a 12xx serial number D-19 in the shop being repaired, that has the panel. I have D-15 4xxx, and D-15 series 2, 21xxx that both have the panel. My Dad also bought a D-17 series 4, in 1967 that had the panel. Another customer has a D-17 series 3, at my sons' shop, and it has the panel also. But, my 1958 D-17 LP, doesn't have the panel or an operation meter/tachometer. I have not seen this discussed before. Possibly, the panel started with the color change from PO 1 to PO 2, and may or may not, be tied to the optional operation meter/tachometer. Have a good day.

Hey guys thanks for the info on the dash, maybe the D-Series I have, the panels just didn't survive.  Anyway, I will be posting pics soon, you will be shocked.  This tractor suffered a gas tank fire about 15 years ago, we paid the owner the ins. salvage price, and it's been sitting in our yard since.  It was just overhauled by Allis prior to the event, but found that it now had water in the pistons, from condensation I guess, it has always had a cap on the exhaust.  Oh well, I love a full tear down, and rebuild, but my wife will be sure to hate the bill.

D17 III and IV and all D19 had them. Not sure if all series II D17 had them but mine does.
