 Topic: G steering wheel, won't come off

am I missing something here?......been working on my resto project G and cant seem to get the steering wheel off. Any sugestions? I have the manuals and can't see what the hold-up would be.....just won't come off

nothing thee but the nut and the key, rust is an amazing glue! Pull the nut and spray well with your favorite nut buster, let it soak a day or so and try again. You may have to put the nut back on several turns and pull up on the wheel while some one raps the nut to jar it

Do I need to stick an awl in the slot as well to jar the key?....good thing I'm getting a new steering wheel because I messed this original up by banging up on the collar

Don't stick anything in to punch on the key. You will only swedge it tighter. Do like Joe said, put the nut back on and put it most of the way down on the threads. Lift up or back on the wheel and rap the nut with a hammer. If you only have the nut on a couple threads, you will mess up the threads on the shaft.

H E A T H O T --- the hub under the nut with the nut about half off. Use a steel block/bar on the bottom edge of the H OT hub and strike hard with a big hammer.
You leave the nut on some so you don't have to chase down the steering wheel. Leave the nut off if you don't mind running after it and bending over to pick it up. At 72 I try to limit the running and bending bit. Real hard to get any thing to seep between a taper lock. Might help on the key way if you have the time. I have never used any thing like that on a steering wheel. Five minute job if you have heat handy.

I agree with Dick L. Lots of heat. I tried the soak and wait game for 2 weeks.....didn't work. Tried heat and off it came. Be careful, my steering shaft was hollow and the threads booger-up real easy. Good Luck, Jeff

I put a bearing puller on it, got it good and tight, then hit the tightening screw GOOD with a hammer. Made a hellava noise when it let go. Having the nut on the shaft kept me from wearing the wheel. Hitting the collar of the wheel does the same thing.

I took a portband electric hacksaw and split the center hub on the steering wheel of my D-15 to get it off. Was easy.

When we have this problem of removing the steering wheel on our "G's" we used a torch and heated the outside area, then tapped it on the backside with a hammer it usually gave up.

just to let y'all know how I got that dang wheel off. I let it sit for weeks soaking in solvent and the only thing that got it off was heat....serious heat.....
