My D 17 IV has a PD pressure warning light: where as my D 15 II does not.
same vintage, what is the engineering rationale for one having it and not the other?

Well, be kind of hard to put one on a D15 as the plumbing is internal - the IV has extermal lines and filter - EZ to put a sending unit there. Some D15's show a cooler and the industrial unit had external cooler and plumbing - just no sender. Rationale is usually cost...

The light was for the Power Director filter, of which a D-15 doesn't have a Power Director filter.

Only D-17 series 3 and 4 models had that red light. The D-19's also had it. When it is OFF, that indicates that the internal lube pump is circulating hydraulic oil to the filter (under the battery tray). It comes ON when the foot clutch is pushed in (lube pump stops rotating) or when the engine is idling with hot hydraulic oil. When cold and idling, the light is probably OFF. If the hydraulic compartment is extremely low on oil, I would expect it to be on quite a bit.
