D17 power steering oil

The simple solution is to us Universal tractor FLuid.. UTF... Hydraulic/ transmission fluid...what every you use on the tractors you have.... You can also use Auto Transmission fluid of type A or F... I would not use the new LV or other synthetic high addative oils that might effect rubber parts.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I use SAE30 in my series 1. UTF works as well. Transmission fluid was used in the later models.

Conventional oil is getting harder to come by all together. Stores are carrying either synthetic blend or full synthetic. Not sure how our old tractors are going to react with that stuff. I really have to shop around to find conventional oil. Another way to get rid of old stuff that needs zinc. Synthetic has its place and I am a fan of it in newer vehicles but not old farm tractors. I had 2 turbo 4 cylinder cars from the 90’s that came with Mobil 1 full synthetic in them from the factory. One had 300,000 miles on it and the other 230,000 when I sold them. They were such powerful cars and pretty trouble free. Never did any engine work to either one. Sorry about that, we are talking tractors not cars lol.
I tried ATF when I first purchased my D17 because the previous owner had it in it. I drained and put fresh ATF in it but quickly drained and changed it to SAE30. With the ATF in it, It was erratic and stiff to steer. I thought fresh ATF would help but it did not. I believe it was too thin for the series 1 system. Steered much better with the sae30 in it. Also started to leak more with the ATF in it. A year later I have rebuilt the pump, replaced all seals in the pump and front bolster. Steers better than ever now. I can turn the wheel with 1 finger.

AC720Man: You are so correct. I had not purchased any conventional oil for about 4 years. I needed some this year. I couldn't believe how scarce conventional oil had become. Kind of shocking. So, I stocked up on a bunch this time before it really becomes rare...

	Hello friends!! I hate to ask a question that probably has been answered, but I tried to do a search and was told I didn't have authority to do a query... So here goes, what is used these days for power steering oil in a series I D17 ? Manual says 20W oil, which I can't find in this area (and my D17 us, in fact, in need of some oil in there!! Thanks in advance... Dan

	Steve, thank you for the response! Since I have 6 tractors, I have an abundance of hydraulic fluid on hand. I had considered that, but (in my mind) thought 20W was thicker than hydraulic fluid....so I talked myself out of it....Thank you again..Dan

	What not ‘power steering fluid’? Can found at any auto parts stores.
	I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.
