Need to remove my starter and it will only move out about 1/2 inch and stops with a metallic thud. Tried twisting it up and down and moving it out but same result. Dead blow won't budge it.
Cone hitting the flywheel?

Suggestions?

did you take the anchor / ground screw all the way out ?  Put a spoon full of penetrant down the hole and let it soak in... A good POUNDING is about all you can do after that... sometimes you can pound a couple chisles in the gap on one side between the starter and the bell housing , then pound / pry on the other side of the starter and rock it in and out.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

As stated in a previous comment oil and tap.  Just don't tap too hard, you can bust the starter housing.  I did have one that would not come out no matter what I tried.  Fortunately, I was going to pull the engine.  With the engine out, I knocked the starter out from the front.  Good luck.

This one moves freely by hand (Yes I have the tapered bolt out) but it just hits something on the way out and stops.  For example I can push it in and pull on it and it stops with a metallic clunk.

The mostly likely place for your problem is front cast iron ring on on the starter nose up close to the drive.  There could be a burr on this ring or in the starter housing tube.  About the only thing you can do is pull the starter back as far as you can and tap.  Push back in and repeat.  Hopefully whatever is holding it will break free.  It could be burr at the retainer bolt hole.   Just check to make sure the back of the starter is not jamming against anything on the tractor.
