Looking for a nice oval Nelson muffler for my D17D series 3. NOS or very nice used. Part No. 237290 and a series 4 would be the same.
Thanks! Edited by GreenOrange - 01 Aug 2022 at 8:15pm |

The only place I know of that you can find any Nelson muffler is A&W Tractor (Alex Wocking) in Cecil WI. I have no idea what he has left for inventory.

Thanks for the replies guys. Alex has them for the gas models, but not for the diesels (at least not yet).

I'd like one for my series 4 diesel as well, but I'm guessing he needs a minimum order amount to proceed with getting them made. They are going to be expensive because of the smaller demand, but will be worth it in the long run, so perhaps anyone that is at all interested in one for the diesels should let him know, maybe we can still get some made up. I've gotten 3 mufflers from him for my D15, D14 and 170 gas, and they are all good quality and am pleased with all of them, but it's got to be practical for Alex as well, he's been good to me when I've gotten other parts from him,

I recall Alex's post in June saying Nelson's cost for the current black oval ones have gone up %400 making the mufflers cost around $600 a piece if he was to have more made. It would be nice to have the Series 3 & 4 diesel mufflers but probably just too expensive to make right now.

Maybe Alex can 'step up' to making mufflers too? and make them out of stainless steel or other kind of suitable metal that won't rust or deteriorate over time.

I have. Simply cost prohibitive to build them at the moment. The diesel production numbers are so much lower than the gas, which doesn’t help either.
I’m fine with a nice used one though. |

It would be pretty easy to graft one of Alex's 180/185 mufflers on your tractor. The oval body is the same size that yours should be. You'll need to use a piece of proper sized pipe to slide down on your exhaust manifold pipe then the muffler slides down onto it. You can get things secured a couple of different ways. The exhaust outlet pipe is taller and larger in diameter, so if the extra height bothers you, cut of off. The engine will like the free flowing features of the 180/185 muffler while quieting it down to acceptable levels.

Is there any reason you couldn't use a 180/185 muffler, which Alex has in stock. The agco book shows the same number for the inlet clamp on d17 diesel and 180/185 so the inlet end of the 185 muffler would be the same as d17 diesel. The muffler body may be longer(not sure) and the outlet pipe little bigger and maybe longer but I would think it would work just fine.A little more open and breath better.

Muffler body is exactly the same. Tail pipe is larger diameter and taller. I'm used to the gas engines that I have to make the pipe spacer adapter.

180/185 mufflers are 2 3/8" I.D. on the bottom and 2 1/4" I.D. on the tail pipe. 18 inches tall on the body.

Dr is correct on the 185 muffler dimensions. But seems to me I had DCAC measure his hole in the hood for a D17d muffler last year and the 185 muffler won't fit through the hood. The D17d/15d muffler has 3"x7" oval body dimensions. So for those who don't mind cutting the hole larger in the hood, it would work as I can confirm the inlet is the same. The 185 muffler may look overly big, so depending on how it looks, maybe cut down the outlet pipe height.

Here is a new 185 muffler next to a NOS late D17d muffler. |

OK. The 185 muffler does fit a gas series 3 and 4 D-17, and also pretty sure the D-19 gassers are the same too. I'm surprised that it fits the gas models and the diesel is a smaller body.

The D19 gas should have a 1 3/8" inlet and the 185 muffler will work on them. You may have hit the wrong key as the 175 gas muffler fit the D17 III/IV gas and the 170 gas, those have the same inlet at 1 15/16". But none of those have the 3x7 oval body required for the D15/17 diesels. And it is not a straight through design. The only other A-C mufflers that have the 7x3 body are the D10/D12 oval and the HD3 crawler that I know of. If I have some time, i'll see if Nelson makes any mufflers for other colors with the 3x7 oval yet.

Not a wrong key. I use the 180/185 mufflers on D-17 3 & 4 and 170 gas tractors. First one was my Dad's series 4 back in 1969 or 1970. I have to use a piece of pipe to adapt the larger inlet to the gas manifold pipe. They sound better, exhaust up higher and surely (in the mind of a 16 yr old ) had more POWER !! I also had engine speed/governor action so full load was 1900 RPM instead of 1650 RPM, so the larger outlet had to help reduce exhaust temps when working it hard.

To update everyone on the D15/D17 diesel oval muffler, according to Nelson there is no 3"x7" oval body muffler in production or in their current catalog. So there will be no alternative Nelson available as ordering new ones is insanely cost prohibitive. Only option is to cut hole in hood larger or to space the 4.25x9" oval above the hood.
