Replacing the manifold tonight I came across an issue rebolting the carb to the new manifold. There is not the same clearance or depth to get the bolts through to bolt the carb back on. Why is the new manifold not the same depth on the intake ??

My original 1953 manifold below. Also what is this sleeve for, a reducer the muffler fits into?

There should be studs in the carb and you use a nut to hold it to the manifold.

Okay. I can make studs for it. The original setup used cap screws down into the carb.

I would guess your "original" setup wasn't really original. All of the WDs and WD-45s I've seen use studs and nuts. That is what is shown in all my parts books as well.

Brian, I'm not sure if WD's had studs or not. The original manifolds had plenty of room to use bolts. Will have to look at 'Grandpa' today and see what it has. Obviously, they could have been changed at some point in the last 70 years!

Both my WDs have studs that the nuts go on top of the flange on the manifold.

I have a question concerning this topic. Are Vinson manifolds still available?
It's the color tractor my grandpa had!

Stud part number 70230917 was used from the WC clear through the 175.

.

If buying a new manifold, they are the updated WD-45 style that has much improved air flow for more horse power out of the WD45 tractor (upgraded HP for WD? for the same flow improvement reason?). To get that manifold feature the space was narrowed above the carb. I bought new studs and nuts at the local hardware store.

Here's an old dealer movie that talks about the WD45 updates, I believe briefly mentions the manifold.

My '52 WD needed new bushings between the manifold and engine block, plus a better fitting new muffler so I ordered and installed the updated new manifold and a new muffler. I figured that since I was going to have to frog around with rusty manifold bolts I'd put a few new parts on it. The tractor is running a lot better now (mostly due to better manifold to engine seal, no air leaks), perhaps it has more horsepower... here's a before/after swap (radiator fan warbles the audio).

Got busy doing other things yesterday and forgot to look. Maybe today?

I would assume if there is a part no. going back to the WC era that studs would be correct.

Finally remembered to have a look at the old WD. It has capscrews, as to weather or not they are original, who knows?
