fake out the competition, or some would even go as far as get certified with the aluminum weights, then swap to the iron ones for a weight advantage. I personally feel it's more of a full rack of weights look more than anything. Competitors trying to copy your front end weight after as great pass.

Some interesting theories, always thought they were more for show-queens. I know there were/are plastic ones available. Probably 1150 less pounds to drag down the road and still have a full rack at the show!

I saw a puller had some skeleton weights this summer, centers cut out, probably less then half a normal weight, with a whole weight on each end you won't know if he is light or heavy on the front.

They can also be used to closely dial in to the max weight, many times if 50# over, you are stuck with either being 50 over or 50 under, so they are like 1/2 the weight. Some guys have steel ones cut out of various thickness also, to help dial in a gnats @$$ lol!

Years ago you had to have a certain amount of moveable weight for some pulling clubs. I heard of a guy that had some made because some scales read a little different and he was that close on moveable weight.

Yep... scales that 'read a little different' are either 'rounding', or what we refer to as "defective"... and there's lots of places that have 'defective' scales.

Usually, 'defective' scales show up in places where competitions exist, but not being used in a legal-for-trade application are exempt from regulatory scrutiny, so it's a common avenue for cheating.
