    Posted: 16 Feb 2022 at 8:57am
Hey all,
I’d like to add an automatic reel speed control module and acre estimator to my ‘84 L3. I don’t have the modules but would like to find them.
What are the steps to getting these functional? Are there any other parts I would need since my machine wasn’t originally equipped with them?
Thanks

Also, if anyone has either module in working or repairable condition they’d sell, please let me know.

I have a spare of each I'd sell you. Can even test them with module tester. Acre estimator needs to be set for you tire size. The auto real needs to have sensors on your head to calculate speed. Your L3 should be pre-wired for those monitors. I've been told those monitors aren't real reliable but I'm doing the same thing and adding them to my combines.

I’ve heard the same thing, that the acre estimator isn’t super accurate. But I would like to get this combine fixed up with all the cab options, and these two things will just leave me missing the clock and horn I believe.

My L3 has the horn.....
I wouldn't have a combine now without the auto reel speed,,, that's jus way too handy, might be neat to have the auto corn head kit for it also..

I ran an R75 with it, and it was really nice.
Granddad’s L3 had a horn, and we didn’t use it much, but was still kinda neat.

Are you needing the auto reel drive on the end of the header? I have that. I may not have the two wire speed sensor or the gear like thingy the sensor read from.

Honestly I’m not sure what all I’ll need. Speed sensor for sure, as far as the drive? I’m not sure. I have an ‘84 model rigid header with the variable speed reel that’s hydraulic driven with the motor on the right side of the reel. Maybe someone who knows will chime in with what exactly I’ll need.

There's a sensor that goes by the real drive motor and large sprocket that it reads off of. Might need wiring that goes to the combine but I think it's all integrated into the wiring harness you already have

This post made me remember last fall. Got a new 9340 Draper for the S78. When the mechanic came to get things set up, he tried everything to make the auto reel speed work. About a day after he left, the thing just started working on its own. Technology is a wonderful thing,,, when it works.

Thanks for the photo! Now I know what I need to be looking for.

Also, Unit3, you are right. The L2/3 were at that point where technology was creeping into the Ag market. Luckily it’s pretty simple technology.

Besides the sensor on the drive motor,ya gotta have the servo on the pump, this is what actually changes the reel speed

Well good news! Thanks to the help of Daehler, I now have an acre estimator and auto reel speed module. I think the only thing I’m lacking is the big sprocket and the speed sensor bracket (pictured further up the thread) that goes on the header. Would anyone reading this happen to have an extra?
Thanks

CrestenM, do you come up North for the Orange Spectacular? I can think of two places up here that might, might be able to help you with the "in cab" items. Do you need the reel drive? I have one in the barn that came off of an 8000 head when we started pushing it with a late R62.

I’m going to try to make it to the Orange Spectacular if I can.
I believe now I have the “in-cab” controls I need for the acre estimator and reel speed. I think the only thing I’m missing is the reel speed sensor bracket and the big “sprocket” it reads from.

Also looking for the digital time clock but that’s a minor detail of lesser importance.
