I just bought a D17 diesel and the lift arms won't raise. I hooked a cylinder to the remote outlet and that works great but the lift arms just stay down. What is going on here, I am confused.

does it have factory three point? My d15 II requires the operator to turn a dial to use either three point or remote cylinder. Not both at same time.

I believe there is a hose inside the housing that supplies oil to the cylinder. It has a tendency to go bad and leak into the housing after 45 years.

Check the coupler where the hydraulic hose fits to tractor. Does it have a round Knob on top? If so try turning it and see if it makes a difference.

The hose to the internal cylinder is not hard to replace. However the way to tell if thats a problem is if the transmision is gaining oil.(since the hose runs through the tranny to get to the cylinder. Check everything else first.

If you mean the transport valve I've tried turning that in and out and it made no difference.

The hydraulic oil was low so I added about a half gallon. Didn't check the tranny. The pump sound like it goes into high pressure standby when the remote cylinder reaches the end of its stroke and if the internal hose was leaking wouldn't it just keep pumping?

If it was leaking internaly it would eventiually leak out of the transmision releif cap. I had a similar problem on my 15 II but the problem turned out to be the packing on the cylinder not the hose itself. I replased the hose anyway since I had it apart. It leaked so bad that the bucket wouldnt lift and oil would be running out the top of transmision. Id still look in the trasporter valve for a problem. You should be able to dial it back so that the remote doesnt work even when plugged in.

I'll give it a try and see what happens. How do I check the hose and the ram for a leak?

Well if its leaking then it must be GAININING oil somewhere else. In my case it was the transmision. You'll have to check all the levels to be sure.You said you added oil.. that should be enough to make the arms lift.
