I picked up a 1949 Model C with a single front wheel at a garage sale for $350.00. It is in decent shape and I was wondering if it is worth refurbishing. I have looked around on the net and don't see much about the C model with the single front wheel. Is that because there isn't much interest or is it because there is not that many out there?

The single wheel C is definately worth restoring. There was only 600 of them built. THE SINGLE front wheel is worth what you paid fo the tractor.

Could you post some pics of you garage sale find.
the other day we struck gold at the garage sales.
1" impact wrench
&
27 1" sockets
&
tripod dual work light
&
75 gallon fuel tank/ toolbox (TSC brand diamond plate) with new pump, hose, and auto shut off nozzle
&
chrome tractor stack
ALL OF THIS FOR $380
Went to Tractor Supply and priced the tank and it alone with nothing else was $750.The new hose, pump, and nozzle put it at a little over $1200. The Impact wrench is an Astro Pneumatic and is $250 in store. The stack is $175 at Steiner Tractor parts. And the light is $150.
I think both of us did good at the garage sales ;)
Haven't ever found any Allis-Chalmers stuff though.
Looking forward to some pics, Jeremy

Don't want to bust or hurt anyones feelings, but I don't want anyone to think that because they found a Single Front Wheel C that they've found a pile of gold. Yes, they are uncommon, but they are around.
Depending on the condition I would or would not restore it. Does it run? Is it in its original paint, IE "work clothes"? If it is, DO NOT restore it. If it needs quite a bit of work a restoration might be nice, but do not for a split second think it being restored is going to make it worth a lot of money. Don't think your going to get out of it what you put in it.

My experience, having a single front wheel CA
It gets lots of attention at shows and pulls and parades and tractor gatherings in general. I am often asked it I'm the guy who has the AC CA with the single front wheel when I'm not with the tractor. It's the only one around this part of Texas that I know of.
If you don't enjoy attention when you go to a tractor event, don't bring a Orange single front wheel AC of any kind.
JD People remember too. Last weekend in Tyler, a fella who pulls a JD 830 recalled seeing me pull 3 years ago up in Paris TX. He made a nice comment about how well it looked and pulled. If it wasn't for the single front wheel it would go mostly unnoticed.
Sure beats painting it PINK if your craving attention.

Spending a few minutes in a parking with my G on the trailer seems to get attention.

There's still one siting in Lufkin, Tx. Not much of it left but he was at $300 last time I talked to him. The price goes up or down every time I see him.

I'd say by now that they're more rare than they were when they came out new, with only 664 SFW C's being built. Heck, the SFW itself was worth the money,if it's in pretty decent shape. Rick

Morton gave sound advice for any tractor, he's not talking about dupont restorations. He knows as much on B-C's in his few young years as most of us twice as old hope to know about them. If you get something non-salvagable do you give it away or let it sit so no one benefits? |

I did not intend to sound like I was trying to make big buckson this tractor. We found the 49 C on my wifes 49th B-day and she had always wanted a tractor. This was perfect for us. A fun project to work on together.
The front tire was rotted off but the rim looks ok. Found a 12 inch tire on a Geo Metro at the wrecking yard to use to get it home. The motor spins with the hand crank so I know it isn't froze. Haven't started tare down yet. We will have to see when I get in deeper. It has a mower attachement mounted on it that runs off the belt. I don't know anything about that yet. I will post pictures soon. |
