Can you use the oiling setup from a later engine on an early engine. I have an oil pump that is after serial # 24001 that I want to put in an early block. I know that I have to change the filter adapter, but is there any other changes. Also any good used pumps for sale.

I don't think so, but I don't know for sure. Early style is a bypass type filter system. The later all the oil goes through the filter.

The pump will likely work: the oil filter and lines will not. The later, full-flow system uses 1/2" or so lines that come from the block, to the filter and then right back into the engine. Means much larger ports in block that aren't there in the older style. But it also means that ALL oil flowing through the engine is filtered FIRST. The old block uses 1/8" lines to bleed a little oil into the filter, and a "tee" runs a little more up to the head to feed the rockers. Behind the filter mount on this one, is a passage way drilled to return the oil coming out of the filter back to the engine. Only a little oil is being filtered at any one time. |

You can use the newer style oil pump as-is IF you have the same tooth count on the gear that mates with the camshaft. You can also convert your old style block over to "full-flow" oiling/filtering system if you have the engine torn down. Takes some drilling and tapping and plugging of certain holes, but it can be done (i've done a dozen or so over the years).

As Dr. Allis says it can be done, but I have heard of a couple cases where the people did not know what they were doing and ruined the motor.

Dr Allis; The motor has been rebuildt and is almost together. Is there any thing intrenal that has to be drilled. I will take the old style bypass and drill and tap the plug for the drain back to the pan.

Is there any other difference with the new style pump other than the full flow thingy? More flow and/or pressure?
cheers,
Creek

You have to drill and tap the block in the horizontal upper passage and drill/tap/plug the drain holes down below and drill/tap/plug the vertical passage to block oil flow between the upper and lower passages. I did an old D17 once in chassis and never had a problem, BUT you have to be really, really, really careful about not getting cast iron cuttings where they don't belong or there will be an immediate failure.

Does anyone have pictures of early and late engines with the pan off. Or any pics of an early block that was already converted. Trying to see the difference between the early and full flow oiling system. Dad took the full flow block out to the farm. I wont be able to get out there til next weekend, and the machine shop would like to get this engine out of his way. I hope to have this in the tractor for the last pull around here in Oct, on Thanksgiving weekend.
Thank's Brian |
