Grandson wanted me to look for ammo at this flea market. The Creedmor he wanted was priced at $65.00 for a box of 20 rounds. Everything else he wanted the guy had but it looked like it was 20+ years old. He said he was paying less than $30.00 a box for creed more rounds. I guess they are legal to use for deer hunting in Iowa. We've got so many of the dam things, I'd like to find a few Claymores and set up around my alalfafa patch. Seems like the alalfafa gets eat off and all I'm baling is grass and weeds. Oh well a filthy old goat will eat anything. Put out a big bale, the first thing they do - 1/2 dozen or so of them jump on top of it and P all over it.

6.5 creedmor? That's probably legal about everywhere, out here it used to have to be 25cal or larger. The state realizes they let the deer get out of hand and a few years back they changed it to any center fire round is ok for deer.(Yep my old 22HP is legal ) Back in 2011-2012 we got terribly dry and I had a 40 acre flood patch of corn along the creek(no water in creek). Deer had water and all the food they could eat. I ended up with nuisance permits shot a bunch only tagged the ones close to the pickup and still tagged over 15, probably shot 30+. When we picked the corn, the long runs on the west end we were getting a semi load every 3 times up and back, when we got to the deer damage I didn't get a combine tank in 4 trips up and back. Figured they did about $5000 worth of damage on a 40 acre corn field. Funny thing I know a bunch of people that claim to hunt to fill the freezer, so I called them to come and get them, they were tagged and legal. Not a one showed up for any venison.![]() Edited by Kansas99 - 06 Aug 2021 at 12:50pm |

My wife will even be supporting me getting deer this year. They ate all of the tomato and cuke plants and continually grazed the flowers off the petunias. They never ever ate any of that stuff in the past! Maybe we got some invasive species deer?!?! I wish someone would offer me some venison. I'll be right over to pick it up.

John, I do like pepper sticks and jerky but after I belch it for 2 days I quit for at least a year before I try it again. I will say few years ago some friends of mine took deer mixed it with a little tallow and brat seasoning then ran it through the grinder. That was venison burger that even I liked, pretty damn good. If you ever make burger give it a try, just mix the brat seasoning like it says for pork but for how ever many pounds of cubed venison and tallow you have throw it all together and run it through your grinder. They did some with breakfast sausage seasoning too and it was good as well. Edited by Kansas99 - 06 Aug 2021 at 5:11pm |

I buy the cheapest fattiest bacon I can. Trim the best parts off and save for normal cooking and then put all the white parts in a bag for later. Grind that bacon fat in with your deer meat. Shoot for 10% on a nice tender young buck or doe and go up from there for an older animal. The fat holds it together, fries up nicer, and gives it a better flavor. If your deer burger doesnt hold together, mix in a teaspoon of soy flour per pound and mix it up. It acts as a binder and holds it together better and adds even more protein. I've taught my kids we feed the deer all summer, they can feed us all winter.

Our local grocery store used to sell boxes of bacon ends and pieces. I’d buy them just for this and beans. I’d separate the good bacon and use for breakfast. |

I'm new here and I just wanna add that, hopefully, you were able to find some decent alternatives at the flea market. Also, just wanted to ask whether you have ever tried out some 17 WSM ammo. It's a great caliber for varmint control and small game hunting, and might even help with those pesky alfalfa-munching goats! It might not be what your grandson would like. Also, it's always good to have some variety in your ammo collection. Anyway, I hope you were able to find some decent ammo at the flea market, and good luck with the alfalfa patch (and those goats)! Happy shooting!

Tom, I don't keep up on deer hunting regulations anymore, but I thought Iowa is straight walled cartridges only. Like 9mm, 357, 44 mag in rifle or pistol and 44/70 used in rifles.
Tom, I'd double check if legal in Iowa on deer, supposed to be terrific on coyote n hogs. |

Coke; I've a rifle in .284 Winchester also. Like you said finding ammo is near impossible.
I've 1 box new, 1 partial box reloads, and 1 box empties.

I found this link at Gungrabber for .284 Winchester at $49 a box. Everything else I found was $100 per box. Here's the link.https://grabagun.com/win-sprx-264win-140gr-pp-20-200.html

Disregard my post. It's for .264 Winchester not .284. I apologize for the post,I clicked on it as .284 and didn't see it was .264.

We have 6 or 8 deer around the neighborhood but it's the 7 elk that have decided they want to hang out on my and my neighbor's places. I can maybe 50 or 60 feet from them on the tractor before they decide to move along. They've been here around 5 years and I worry they are going to tell their buddies over closer to the mountains, 5 miles away. There's a couple hundred over there.

Last year’s regulations indicated not less than .35 caliber. I believe the Creedmore round is smaller. |

I'd say you're right. Conversion (MM/25.4=INCH) 6.5/25.4=.2559 |
