 Topic: D15 power steering

I have a series II D15 that needs power steering. Are there any "kits", or does anyone have a "parts list" to complete this type of project? What type of pump, what does a charr-lynn steering unit do, how does it work?

With the design of the D series power steering, your best bet is to find a parts tractor that has power steering and install it on your D15
|

Definitely a parts tractor is the best way. Are you familiar with agco's online parts book? You can jump on there and see the manual steering vs power steering. Also the pump is hard mounted to the right lower side of the engine block, gear driven.

There are Char-Lynn kits out there. That is what I had on a D14, before I got a D15 with factory P/S. The D14 with the Char-Lynn steering was unsafe to drive on the road at top speed. because the steering was too sensitive. It was great in the field at slower speeds, it just wouldn't stay in a lane on the road.

The entire front support from a D-14 is narrower than a D-15, so it will not fit between the side frames. I think you might be able to cannibalize a D-14 front support and transfer everything over into your D-15 front support, but that would be a ton of work. Best bet would be find everything from a D-15 of any series and the same engine (gas or diesel).

If you can find a Char-Lynn torque generator from just about anything, You could splice it into the steering shaft alongside the engine as it was mounted in my D14. The hard part then will be finding a pump to go in the hole under the governor, or maybe you could stuff a car pump under the hood over the generator and add a pulley to the crankshaft to drive the car pump.
