 Topic: Attaching a John Deere No.5 Sickle Mower to Allis

I recently purchased a John Deere No.5 Sickle Mower to cut hay this next summer and I have a Allis Chalmers D17 that I would like to attach it to my only predicament is actually attaching it to the tractor I was wondering if anyone had any ideas. The D17 currently has a 3 pt hitch adapter on it.

here it is bolted to a 3 point.... I think i might consider a rod or pipe 30 - 36 inches wide bolted to the sickle, then 3 point on the end of pipe.

you'll hafta run the sickle at full speed even with new sections. and depending on what yer cutting, sometimes it did better without the dividing board. dad had one, and it was about the most miserable mower out there. and if the chain breaks inside the cast box, put a wire on one end of the new chain so you can fish it up to the top to re-connect. you'll remember a few swear words you've forgoten.

We used them for years behind a Ford. It was bolted to a drawbar on the 3 point with stays keep it in position. There was a U shaped bracket to bolt to the 3 point drawbar. A cable ran to the lift arm to raise the sickle. We also had one I added a lift cylinder to. Only problem we has was breaking the pitman shaft. Good guard and section help a lot.

John Deere made brackets to mount the #5 mower to several different brands of tractors. If you can find an older operators manual it shows these brackets. I have WD with John Deere made brackers.

When I got my D17, it had a JD#5 cobbled to a drawbar... it was sloppy in just about every conceivable way. I had to call about two-cyl enthusiasts before I finally found ONE who'd take it away...

get yourself a belt driven mower and away from a pitman arm. we had that no 5 set up for years and i haven't got one good thing to say about it!

I mounted a #5 on a WD45. I bought a used bracket and then added a pressure reducer so as to not blow my hydraulic cylinder. That JD bracket is one heavy SOB. And you have to remove the drawbar assembly to install it. It has been a good mower for me, but I only use it about once a year.

We happen to own a #5 mower that's original to our farm. Having used it to cut hay and weeds back in the day, I definitely agree with what others have said....it can be a frustrating experience, especially if that's well-worn. Definitely run the PTO as fast as possible to have any chance for a decent cut.
Anyway, I still have the owner's manual from 1953. Ours was always attached to a JD 2-cylinder, so I can't speak to D17 mounting. However, as mentioned, the manual lists special mounting kits that they offered for common tractors at that time and includes mounting diagrams for those tractors. I was able to scan the mounting illustrations for AC tractors. Hopefully this is helpful:

I mowed hundreds of acres with a #5 mower hooked to a WD45. A sharp sickle and good ledger plates in the guards, I could now anything with it. Probably one of the best mowers I ever ran.

Good point. A sharp, well-adjusted knife is key. Once you have that, and get the speed dialed in, it will do a good job in most conditions.
Our #5 is the only sickle mower I've ever used, so it's probably not wise to talk it down too much with nothing to compare against. The times I can remember being frustrated with it were in conditions where most sickle mowers would likely struggle, like tangled down grass. There's a reason why haybines were invented.

I've attached JD mowers to WD/WD-45 tractors for over 50 years with success. I use this drawbar my dad obtained or had built when we got our first #5.

I have an identical drawbar, except mine is green, that they used for JD #9 mower. Dad told me they were available from John Deere for other makes of tractors, to mount JD mowers.
