 Topic: Want to build round bale spear

This went from WTB in classified add section( want to buy to ' want to build!)  Where white circle is I'm mounting a 4' 3600lb bale spear I bought and want to know what are some thoughts on it? I'm making it so if I want to use rear blade in future I can so all connection is being done with 5/8 and larger bolts( found some bolts that fit perfectly in end of lift arms once I removed the quick pin clips so it's as strong as possible)

I'm going to mount the vertical pallet fork so that when a bail is picked up the bail is a couple inches in front of the rear tire to make it as close as possible to the tractor...
What I don't know is in doing this mounted to the snap coupler at the bottom and the lift arms on top how it will balance on the tractor (I feel like this way should transfer
more weight towards the center of the tractor instead of all of it being balanced on the back like a lot of aftermarket 3-point Bale Spears are constructed?)

The closer to the ends of the lift arms the less "leverage" to lift the front. But it is still behind the axle so in my mind I don't see any transfer to the center. To me it will be about the same as a spear on a regular 3 point hitch. Just my thoughts.

On a 3 point I believe it only connects to the lift arms and the top link( I know the hydraulic arms hold most of the weight but it seams like it should be stronger and not put so much stress on the hydraulic arms and none on the top link)
It actually fits width wise between the rear tires but then it may create a pinch point and if bale is too wide rub on tires, so I'm thinking of putting it just infront of tires.
I'll know more only after I bolt it all up.
Others replied to a earlier thread of mine stating the snap coupler bale Spears were best but I don't have any comparable unit...

Don't kid yourself, if this is on a D14/D15/D15II your top link will get plenty of the stresses. If you have the OEM top link bracket, either one hole or three hole, make sure to keep an eye on the front mounting bolts so you don't pull the threads on the tractor or worse yet, get sent for a ride as it bolts on under the seat frame. I use a well built 3-pt spear with one spear and two short lower spikes with OEM A-C SC to 3-pt adaptor on D15 series one and two and a 8-900# bale is all you want, and I run taller rear rims/tires. Always had 2 each rear wheel pie wts. bolted to each side of engine side rails on a D15II and handled it fine but switched to a series one D15 last fall and the front end surprised me as it stays well planted.
Keep it as close as you safely can to the rear tires and make sure it can lift it high enough for what you want to do AND GO SLOW, I put bales out in 1st gear but I am never more than a couple hundred feet from where they are stored so 1st high range is plenty fast for me with the tall tires. I also welded a ball atop my spear frame as I move both my 14K gooseneck and 16' stock trailers around the yard SLOWLY.

Hopefully you have other tractors pulling that draw bar off and on every time you want to move a bale will get real old real quick.

My advise; I have been moving 800-1000# round bales since 1981, put your effort toward a front end loader and wagon to move them.

I made this...20 years ago...  and my D-14 will lift 2500# or more with it. I place real forklift forks on the top rail i the notches. Your 'plate of steel' seems unecessarily complicated and heavy, taking away from payoad capacity. If you built a similar unit, you could shave 200#+- off the 'frame'. Maybe an option. I modified it this summer, lift latches are swivelable.

In theory what I'm building is identical to yours as in the lower portion is clipped into the snap coupler and the upper portion will be connected to my lift arms (keeping it as close to the rear PTO as I can get it and still clearance away from the tires)
Thank you very much for sharing that picture because it confirms to me that what I'm doing should work...
I understand that it is heavy but it's all I have for right now and sometimes you just have to do what you can with what you have and improvise until you can use it and see how it works...
I have the forks for it also that clip on so I can use it for a pallet carry-all for getting firewood out of my woods also!

I'll ake some new pictures and measurements today. It was 'fun' hauling a 10' long, 30" chunk of black walnut on it a month ago. I really appreciated BOTH brakes, only way I could steer as front end was a tad 'light'..... One dimension I know, lower the arms all the way down. Say it's 36" from liftlatch to ground, make the frame 'arms', 34-35" long. That will make it easier to install and give you maximum lift or height.

I got my Bale spear rated for a 3600 lb that comes with a sleeve and a large nut. I'm going to cut a hole through the pallet fork assembly and weld it into place and then I just need to connect it to my tractor, so more to come!

I finally completed welding everything up on my multi-tool for the back of my d17 (it has pallet forks a bale spear a pig pole attachment and a trailer ball. So far I've only used the trailer ball to go get some firewood out of the woods with it but I'll be making round bales this year so I'll put the Bale spear to the test. I'm wondering if I'll need weight on the front of her?(1000 lb round bales)
