I figured 5 18s would serve well on the break in. We plowed around 60 acres with it this spring. It was running good but after about 2 acres you could tell everything seated up and it's ran like a brand new 301 as it should. Very happy with the results of this project. The pump is set at 135 hp. The engine doesn't lug or seem overstressed at all. It is one hell of an upgrade from the 190xt with comparable fuel efficiency.

I'm sure you were happy after rebuilding engine and have it run so good. I know the feeling.

Thanks guys. I was definitely relieved to see it run. This is the 1st diesel I've completely overhauled like this I've done some gassers and so many small engines I can't count. But there was some nerves going as we hooked this one up to the plow. But it just made it all the more satisfying to watch it work.

Not being negative, always glad to see Orange back up and moving. Why the 301?

Thanks for photos & congratulations on your AC project. Good to see any AC kept from going to salvage yard.
So... basically you’ve built a turned up 7010? Well that is - assuming the 301 is turboed only. I don’t see a 7020 intercooler. Edited by AC7060IL - 23 Jun 2020 at 9:22pm |

I still like the torque of that old 426 when it has a load behind it. MACK

Well we have 2 7060s with the 426 one i overhauled this winter. The other is getting the works this fall. I've got a 24ft field cultivator and a 6 bottom 18in plow. And that's the only implements on the farm that take more that 100hp to pull. So when I got into the 426 it had 2 spun bearing needed seats and valve guides new valves of cource and a complete overhaul we were looking at around 4 grand in parts and machine labor. We had the 301 sitting collecting dust i put $1700 into it that includes the adapter plate from a 7020. Plus I wanted fuel efficiency and its real hard to beat a 301 if your looking for over 100hp. Grandpas 190xt has been the workhorse on this farm since he bought it new its been my go to until now like I said it's a wonderful upgrade from that with only about a half gallon an hour more fuel consumption. The air conditioner is worth all of that lol. |

I'm with ya there mack the 426 is a whole different animal. I only have a 100 acre organic operation. As I was pulling out of my last field this spring I was looking at the neighbors fields going "I wonder if they could use some help this year". Hahaha. But it would pull that 24ft field cultivator in 6th. I've got some clay hills on the farm that dropped it to 5th and 4th on rare occasion but over all it didn't care. |

The bigger intercooler is coming. I found a 301 in a L Gleaner at the bone yard he only wants 600 for the whole engine and I'm told "it runs great" to quote the guy lol. In the next couple weeks here I'm headed up with the compression tester and battery to check it out. But the plan is to take that intercooler and put it on this 301 and dull the new one down for a back up for my M2 Gleaner. Mine runs good but it makes me feel better knowing the engine could blow up and I can be back in the field the next day. |

Model "L" never had an intercooler available. Not until 1980 & up L-2/L-3's.
