A good friend of our hosts a large plow day every year, this is the 5th year.  Theres horses and tractors plowing, old combines doing wheat, balers doing the straw and other things.  it usually brings out 2-300 tractors and 2-3000 people.  This year RFD-TV was there and it will be aired on there show, as well as a DVD made of this years event.  Heres a few pics I took.

Now I'm really bummed I didn't go!  That Gleaner S in the picture used to be mine.  I didn't have the know-how to get it back running.  Now I regret it!  Gentleman's name is Randall.  He's a Case man, as you can tell.  Looks like it's doing a good job!

There has been garden tractors in the past, I don;t think I saw any this year.  In the past we had a section designated for them, but the ground this time of year is usually not kind to garden tractors.

I only live 3 miles away, and support the event in different ways. Hopefully next year I can reserve a small garden-type area for  garden tractors. In the past we have been over-run with Cub Cadets & John Deere, so if it happens we will need all of the A-C/Simplicity's we can get!!!

And what kills me - is the very best bottom land in the state is what Detroit was built on. So defiled with industrial waste that it will never be safe for food again.

My parents place north of Clarkston - soil so rich you could smell a plowed field a mile away - with rocks the size of a kitchen table. My grand parents place in Otisville is sandy and needs lots of water. Here in Lapeer, its clay and rich, but dries out with 3-4 ft deep cracks some years in August. Lots of tiling & giant ditches.

God, I love Michigan! I'll be glad when we get our economic mess straightened out & small farms make a comeback.

This plow day is held in the south-eastern part of Lenawee Co. Michigan. The land is very flat, you can see small towns and villages from up to ten miles away.  The urban sprawl issue has slowed greatly over the last 10 years. Mostly due to health dept. regulations, and the slowing economy. Now the issue in this area is the possible future construction of wind turbines and wind farms. It is quite possible that future plow days will require us to plow around, or in front of wind turbines. I'm certainly not preaching the pros & cons of wind energy, but th open range of  agriculture in this area is rapidly changing.

As Jeff wrote, Aug 13 & 14. This year the featured tractor and equipment will be Oliver (at least still part of AGCO) but we need more Allis-Chalmers equipment to smother JD and IH. There should be a good demonstration of A-C All Crop combines harvesting some left over standing wheat. Golf  carts are allowed (drivers must be 16 tears of age and up). Hope you and anyone else can make the trip.
