    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 at 8:47am
I just picked up a front mount hd-8 post driver i'm going to mount on my WD45 to put in some horse fencing around my place and was looking for some advice from anyone who has that setup.  Specifically looking at the way the WD45 hydraulic system is setup I think I need to have the post driver valve configured as a closed center valve with a pressure relief to keep the pressure down for the driver?  The normal pressure on those drivers seems to be 1500psi so i don't think I want to feed it Allis system pressure?  Probably need a shutoff valve in the loop to completely shutoff the feed to the driver when i'm not using it to keep the fluid from getting hot running through the relief all the time?  The pump output should be adequate because they only call for 3 gpm.  I'm assuming I could just connect the pressure line back at the rear aux port and feed the return back into the hydraulic drain port on the bottom of the tractor?

Also any experiences or tips would be greatly appreciated.  It's a manual tilt unit but I have pretty level ground so I don't think that will be that annoying.

Thanks.

No to all except the last 2.
You need an open center valve. Free flow when the valve is centered will not heat the oil. Closed center is only for variable displacement pumps with pressure compensation. The driver will only use the pressure needed to operate. Pressure will only go up if you bottom the cylinder. To make the driver operate correctly, You need as large a return as possible. Any restriction here will slow the rate of drop.
We had one of the drivers on a WD45. It had a 1 in. return and a tank on the return mounted on the frame.

I run the same driver on my Farmall 560 and now on my 7010. My return line is big but it's still plumbed into the return port like any other piece of equipment. No problems yet. You do have to open the valve full on the downstroke. It seems to be more effective on the larger tractor. More inertia I think. I had it on the front of the 560. Handy but it would bounce the front a mite. I'd load pics but apparently this site doesn't like them today.

You might be better off driving a separate pump offa the crankshaft.  Price out the components you need, and compare, before constructing...Wink

Iā€™m glad to see this post. I have a WD that am thinking of putting a driver on it. It had one on it at some point. It also used to have a loader on it. When I bought it, lift arms were laying under it on the ground but loader was no where to be found. It also had the side saddle oil tank mounted on the foot clutch side of the frame. I have no use for it as a loader tractor, narrow front, and no power steering. So my thinking was the tank was for the loader? So I removed it. But, I still have it. And it had a 1ā€ hose feeding the tank. A shut off valve teed off the hydraulic line feeding the rear hydraulic outlet if I remember correctly. Assuming that may have feed the driver? Joe does that sound similar to your hookup?

Oh, the tank also had a hose that went under the tractor and teed into the bottom of the hydraulic sump, drain plug screwed into the bottom of the tee. Assuming now the tank held the extra oil the driver required?
