lol...I agree! I've seen others built up the same way, a different Allis, a 8N ferd, an Oliver. I think it was a kit that you could buy.

I just remembered...Hagie high boy sprayers started out with tractors like this, same type drive, then they changed over to their own hoods.

According to the number, the engine is WD. But...... it has the curved shifter.
The engine serial number puts it right at the beginning of the transition to the helical-cut tranny (curved shifter) so I would say its a late WD.

D17 engines go for quite a bit, but I'm thinking someone had a bad engine, bought another engine to transplant, and found out it was bad as well. Maybe $1000 and part it out. I think those weights, and other parts may be worth that, plus!

Those were used in hybred seed corn production. Uncle Frank had a tractor salvage lot. One of our local seed producers took 20 8n ferds, bought conversion kits like those and attempted to spray and to other things around the seed corn acres. They didn't have enough power to do the job. On top of that they were too unreliable when it came to starting. Uncle Frank bought all of them, removed the conversions, put them back to 8n ferds and shipped them all out of state. I was there and helped put them back to the original form. The seed corn company bought up some D17 allis and had them converted.

I took a look at the D17III today.
I was thinking the engine was bad so they found a good engine but never got around to putting it in.
But it looks like John was probably right,
they didn't install the engine because it's broke too.
There is an engine on the ground next to it,
I couldn't get it to turn by hand, on the crank pully.
Wouldn't budge. Should be able to turn it by hand right?
Or should I have gotten the breaker bar out?
Got a chance to talk to an old guy about it,
seems he'd been looking at it.
He pointed out the lever and told me to shift it forward.
It popped right back up.
Supposed to be a 2-speed gearbox but it won't stay pushed forward.
It was nice to get a close up look at a D17III. I might go back this week and sit in the seat like a kid,... push some peddles.

So the Power Director is bad. If the block and the crank on the second engine are good you can rebuild it. That tractor can be fixed, but be prepared to shell out some $$. If you can't do the work yourself don't even think of going there.

So that's what they call the power director,
that lever to the right of the driver runs it and it chooses between a high and low gear. Like a 2-speed rear end in a truck.
I'm sure I could figure it out mechanically, especially with help from people on this forum.
But I'm still set on getting a WD to work on,.. I think I found one just waiting for the ground to get solid again,.. and not the froze kind of solid.
