I just looked in Swinford's book. There is a chart on pg 163 but a little hard to follow. Looks like 8181 units were diesel from 1957 to 1963. From 64-67 it says details not available. Maybe others will clarify. Looks like a total of 62540 D17's were built in all. Maybe less than 1/2 diesel??? I think towards the end maybe the gas numbers dropped a bit as diesel was getting more popular but just guessing on that.

Anyone have an idea on this one? WD45 diesel numbers are listed as 6,509 units in all.

Ok just found an answer. Tractor data lists number of D17 diesels as 12,284 although they also list the total number at 82,000 which is high. Norm Swinford lists it as 62,500. There were some serial number breaks during the years.

If you look in the back of Swinford's book, page 375, it has the West Allis production numbers by model broken down per year.  Its showing 51,598 gas D17s and 12,284 diesels were built.

So more than 4 gas D17s were built for every diesel.
