As many here know I work at a deere dealer (to support my orange tractors I might add) I survived going to school for it down by shameless and have been full time employed for a month now. Was talking with the shop foreman who has been working on deere for 40 years and decided i was the guy to learn the old stuff being the other techs will pass it up. I told him I'll gladly learn anything he has to teach. He said it was his opinion I was the best to learn the old stuff because I genuinely enjoyed the older equipment. I'm glad to learn the old stuff due to them being a very relevant piece of farming even in modern times.

You could say 'someone has to do it' ... but you can add, you like to work on older stuff AND it is probably easier to work on without all the electronic 'stuff'. have fun...

That's great! I'm glad to hear a fellow youngster (I'm 20) is still motivated to learn how to service all the older machines.

In my opinion new is as easy as old but i grew up with it. I firmly believe the other guys are shooting themselves in the foot by passing up anything. Hell I got excited when I saw a 2 banger deere in the row to be fixed |

It could be shameless I try my hardest to keep out of that political stuff. I enjoy the customers and the machines but not the big corporation bs that comes with it lol |

Was at a Western Star dealership (old Ford / Sterling truck) and talking to mechanic . He was saying he was one of the few guys there willing to work on things that don't have computers - seems most of the mechanics only know how to do what comes up on the screen when truck is plugged in .
Seems also they only have one mechanic who knows how to work on older Allison Automatics in Fords - there again unless it has a diagnostic mode when hooked to a computer they are at a loss - but then they do R and R only and not rebuilding of them . |

Good choice, hope they’re willing to let him teach you! I too was the only young man that liked the “old”stuff and was will to help the customers that didn’t have new tractors. I even worked at a dealer in the 90’s who discouraged people from coming in that didn’t have modern equipment. Took me several years to prove to him that these people were worth dealing with, were fateful customers, and spent good money! If you learn it you will become the one people come in and ask for.
At my Deere dealer it became go get Joe from the other counter (I worked at the service parts counter) he’ll know what i’m Talking about, he’ll help me. I always enjoyed it, got to meet some great people, and none of my bosses interfered with me when I was dealing with them. The same will go for you! Good luck! |

i really dont mind rebuilding or doing majors for customers but you must be able to warranty it , mostly it is more profitable and cheaper to you and the customer to just r & r a componant that has the manufactures warranty on it . remember major or re built means EVERY part, nut bolt ect. is worked on not just most of it . thats very costly and time consuming in the shop . a componant that needs a small repiar shouldnot be over looked either

That attitude will help to make you the go to guy in the shop. Learn all you can about the old equipment but don't forget what you have learned in school about the new equipment. A lot of the smaller operators want their older equipment repaired right at a fair price while the big time operators just want theirs to last until the lease runs out. Glad Shameless didn't teach you any of his devious ways while you were down his way.
