Its pretty easy when the wheel is off. I had to take the wheels off to do some repairs to the prior owner's homemade 3-Pt hitch so I figured I'd drop the pans and change the oil. There was a bit of black sludge in the bottom of the pans but not nearly as bad as some I've dealt with before.
Dumping the oil in the pan before installation makes the job fast and    easy. I had to make only one gasket; the other one stayed together.

Brian - nice! Thanks for the progress pictures - always interesting to see them, even for smaller jobs like this one. What advantage does the synthetic lube give you?

The Mobil 1 is probably overkill but I had gotten a few Qts a while back at a car show/flea market really cheap so I've been using it up.
We all know the oil in these final drives hardly ever gets changed and rarely annually like the manual says. So......why not put some good stuff in there?
I replaced the gear oil in my Bush Hog with the same stuff; can't hurt, I guess.

i agree on the hardly ever changed part. if the synthetic doesn't break down as they claim, why not dump it in....it'll probably be there for 10 years and hopefully won't turn to sludge/tar during that time.
besides, after buying that stufff, it makes your wallet a little easier to carry!

just did the same with mine this weekend, i could've sealed my driveway with the stuff i dumped out of there, yuck!... didn't take the wheels off cause i had weights on but spun the rims out as far as they go, also I used permatex rtv gear oil gasket maker instead which seemed to work good

Brian thanks for the pics I did mine this spring getting ready for the 197 mile ride over to Albert City IA in aug. . I had never changed them and have about 800 caravan miles on the tractor. Makes a guy feel beter knowing whats in there!!

I agree about "feeling better knowing what's in there".
I have never dropped the pans on either of my 45s (this was my D-17) but the LH pan on my mower WD-45 has been changed a few times as the axle seal leaks quite profusely! LOL
BTW, I'm pretty old and definitely "from the old school" so naturally, I still use
good old cork gasket material and "Permatex #2".
