largest corn planter that Allis Chalmers built and that you owned. Back in 1976 I purchased a 4 row 500 AC planter that was equipped with dry fertilizer. Ran it a few years then updated to a 7000 planter.

Late 70's to mid 80's had an Allis 600, 6x30" No-Till with dry fertilizer and I think #74 ground drive units. The AC 180-D bellered some when it was fully loaded and planting in Alfalfa field; after taking hay cutting off, then wait 3-4 days spray ( to kill alfalfa ) and plant the next day. Then got good deal on retiring neighbors; 8-30 setups of cornhead, flex bean head and planter. so switched to JD 7000 8-30 planter setup no-till and dry fertilizer.

One of my fuel customers bought a 12 row. To transport it you raised it up, swiveled it 90° and pulled it to the next field.

I'm sure they did. I read that Allis had the largest share of the no-till planter market.

The AC 390 front folding planter was available as 12, 16, or 24 rows.

Was the 24 row available with air champ units.....? If it was, that would have 8 electric blowers on it. Not sure what tractor would have the juice to run em. I wouldn't mind having a 24 row one, if I could find one cheap. darrel

A few years back there was a 24 row up in I think North Dakota, they guy was asking I think 750 bucks, and it was the 78 unit model. I just didn't have the extra money back then. More than likely it ended up being a bunch of 2 row food plot planters. I nearly cried when I saw the add, but couldn't move on it.

I don't get that either. The 385 planter was an Allis-Chalmers designed row unit, but this cool 12-row frame was after the Deutz-Allis buyout and don't think it had any A-C development money in it. We sold several of them and that 12-row frame was a pretty unique design and was capable of dry or liquid fertilizer on the front bar.

Here mine, just put 6 acres of corn in the ground. I was told it started as a 6-40, then was changed to a 8-30. The guy I brought it from, then cut it down to a 4-30. The weight was added when it was a 8-30.

I still have my 8 row 3-pt with end transport. bought it back in about '85. was always mounted on my 180D. heck of a good planter, but I don't know what model # it is.

The 385 never did come bigger than 12 rows, did it? I wonder how it would work to put 24 of the 385 units onto the allis 24 row bar? Would the 385 units be too heavy for it.....? Darrel

The new White planters, with the electric drive, have a hydraulically driven generator. Once again, looks like Allis was ahead of the game. As a sidebar, saw one of the new Challenger MT743's over the week end, it has two 150 amp alternators on it.
