I got a bit of a problem with the overhead fan in Dining room.some time back the dang switch on fan would only run on slow and medium so being a thrifty type person,,,,,i opened it up to see which switch to order and not finding one on web, wife wanted me to at least put together til i found switch. There were three 14 ga wires,,blue, black and white. The light used the blue and the white wires. Black wire went to fan switch,,,,SOMEWHERE,,,,!!!
There are four smaller 16 ga wires for fan. Purple, Gray, Yellow and Red. Don't really want to experiment and burn up fan motor so can the juicetricians here tell me which TWO wires to run fan on high with a regular pull switch?? Thanks for any and all help.

Don't suppose you could google the fan company for a wiring diagram?

John's right.  If you know the brand and model of the fan, go to their web site, then click on support and you probably can download the manual for the fan.

Yea, an electrical diagram would help a lot...
Did you take the switch apart to see how it made contact at each 'click' of the switch?
Many different fans out there, do like John suggested, google your fan brand...
 here is a hunter diagram...

 Good luck

Hey JC actually the dang switch fell apart when removing it!!!!
Lookin at the second dwg you posted looks to be the same as what was there before it fell apart.
What Id like to do is install a. Off/on pull switch for the High Speed Only and the heck with the medium and slow speeds.
Lookin at the dwg,,,could I install a pull switch between the big black (power) wire and the small red/yellow wires,,,??
What say ye,,,,??

Well I don't trust the btm picture... teh 'reverse switch' doesn't appear to do anything..
Normally with DPDT switches the outermost contacts 'criss cross' to revierse.
As shown the uper section.. pnk-gry-pnk, so no matter if the swicth is in the left or right spot, the gry center wire is always attached to the pnk wire.

if the pull switch is bad........... just hook the black and grey together to get HI.. green and brown and low and med........... black is HOT.

the capacitor is in the system to make the motor START.. better not mess with the red and yellow wires.

Go on Craigslist and get a GOOD one for cheap.  There's a LOT of CRAZY people out there that just HAVE to get rid of stuff.  I could have gotten 10 of em down by my Sister for less than $10 each, like NEW....

DJ, I know you are frugal (I didn't say cheap) but it might just be less expensive in the long run to buy a new fan and install it.

When I redid the 'back room' ( used to be the 'hot tub' room ) I bought a unit from HomeDepot that has a remote control unit. BEST cash I laid out I, the Dutchies think(er, Know ) I'm cheap ! These units control fan and light without the need to pull a 3rd (red) wire (aka 14/3). It's been 15-18 years, used a LOT and works like a charm. I'm all for recycling and such but sometimes you deserve to splurge( like the BS23s sitting here...)

yeah Joe...be safe and just go buy a new fan/light combo! i'm think'in your house and Joyce is worth more to you than what a new fan will cost! you know...there's cheap, and then there is CHEAP! DO YOU HEAR ME? CHEAP! I did the same thing on one that quit on me several years ago, when I pulled the cover off, things just didn't look good in there. tried to find another switch like it, and found nothing that would match. i'm cheap too, but not as CHEAP as you are! guess I should expect that out of a person that keeps getting ferds! (poke, poke)

Well,,,,as usual,,,,I took the advice of my friends here and took it out and put in a nice unit from Lowes as they had 3 of them on sale for a really frugal price of $39.95,,down from $117.00,,,!! They are the 52" brushed nickle with the 4 light kit and 3 speed and reversible motor. I told the salesperson I KNEW thet fellar from Nebraska that was friends with the Lowes CEO,,,,,, and,,,,and,,,she went to twitterin and stammerin and told me OK,OK,,,You can have it for ,,,,,,$39.95. Believe it or else,,,,,
I threw the old fan ona box for sale on my yard sale in the fall. Box already marked "Ran when Parked",,,

so, DJ, did you buy ALL 3 of them ? At that price I'd have bought 2..maybe all 3 cause with gas at $5.20 USD/USG I prefer to make ONE $$ trip not several...

Also when it goes up 'someone' will say...gee 'we' could install one in this room and maybe that room.....
