After years of searching I found my grandfather's 653. She's in rough shape but that doesn't matter. Guy parked it because it lost drive and I have to talk to him some more but I remember something about fluid loss. What are common issues with loss of drive? This is an early 653 with the dry clutches like an HD4. Thanks for any help!

Yes if the torque converter or the clutch pack is low or empty - the machine will not move . dipstick under the right floor board and is suppose to be checked warm with engine running - it might have mark for off position but not a true reading

Thanks Coke. Not sure if you saw the pics over on Facebook but she's not sged well since he sold it back in the early 90's. First on my agenda is getting it running when moving, then chase from there.

It was unbelievable to find it especially just a few miles from home. Been on a hard hunt for his D15 series 1 diesel also but it seemed to have disappeared.

I understand. One thing about heavy equipment, in many cases it does not move far from home due to shipping. The larger the piece of equipment the closer to home base it can be. The HD16 I have went through 4 owners during the span of 1961 to present. I found each owner and the original owner and have talked to them all on tractor history and past issues or repairs. Tractor wound up roughly 150 miles from point of origin when I found it. Was pretty cool digging into to it.

Stopped today and got the manuals from the previous owner and talked to Jim a bit. Reason it stopped moving is it started dumping trans fluid. Once I get it home I guess I'm hunting for a blown line or seal. Any prone spots for fluid loss?

My machine has the foot steer drive. It developed leaks in the lines just below the seat and above the differential. It would really help if you knew the location of the drip falling from machine. Tough machine for a big man to work on!!!!!

my hd4 had leaks on bottom of torque tube housing covers. tightened down and stopped them. also as mike said the lines from the shuttle shifter to the side going into the torque tube assembly get rotten and leak. check to se if atf fluid is in the rear differential compartment. hope not !

She's home! Was very easy getting loaded. Did some more talking with the previous owner and he never found exactly what the leak came from but said it appeared internal. Just ATF was leaking. Possibly the Torque converter?
