I got the C timed and it runs and sounds great at idle. When I put a load on it, either in gear or run the mower, it dies. Changed the plugs to J8C and gapped correctly. Now it's blowing oil through the manifold and onto the underside of the hood. What is my next move? Plugs are fouled with oil when I check them after running... I will have a video of me driving it up soon...

Where is the oil coming out of? The exhaust? If a  valve isn't seating good it could suck oil through on intake and blow it out fouling plugs. If it runs good at an idle I wouldn't think you have a valve hanging up though.

The oil is dripping off the underside of the hood, looks to be coming from the exhaust manifold.

Joe - I'm sure I'll be fined for the 4 quarts lol!

Could have worn or stuck rings. Do a cranking compression check and if its low put air on the cylinders one at a time while on TDC and listen for the leak.

Take the oil filler cap off and put the palm of your hand over the pipe and see if you can hold the pressure from getting out of the valve cover by your hand. (while it is running)
That is more than likely where the oil is coming from.

My C will do that when worked real hard, just like Dick says right out the breather cap, the fan tends to spread it around not a lot but it will get a bit messy after harrowing for a few hours or bush hogging high heavy weeds. It does it more when the oil is getting some time on it as well. T.J.

TJ - My C does that also, I (and you) consider that normal. I have lots of blue smoke coming from the exhaust manifold and it misses and slows, but does not die under load. Checked the Governor as that was what I replaced, and at idle the governor works perfectly when I simulate a load by pulling on the spring at the carburetor. I will try to get the video up so everyone can see it.

DickL - I am able to hold pressure there and I only get a little (comparatively) oil on my hand. It blows blue smoke out of the exhaust and as stated earlier, there is black oil on the underside of the hood that is so thick it drips down onto the manifold and the engine when the engine is off. When enngine is turning, it blows back at me!

What do the plugs look like? If they are oily then the motor is worn out or rings stuck.
I've got a CA that never smokes out the breather or exhaust no matter how hard it is worked and the plugs always look dry. So I know its possible.

When I took the plugs out when I timed it, the plugs were clean and dry, once I got it started and timed correctly, it started missing and lugging under load. when I shut it off and checked the plugs they were all fouled with oil.
I have not done any major work on this engine since I have had the tractor (5yrs). I did get it unstuck a couple of years ago but all I did then was drain the ATF/Acetone mix, flush good and fill with oil and off we went!

Well now there is one more thing possibly. If the return galleys are plugged not allowing oil to go from the head to the pan it could be filling up in there. Had that happen once on a 305 Chevy. Simply looked in the valve cover while it was running and saw the oil filling up under the cover. Reamed out the return holes and the smoke stopped. If thats not it then you've got a worn out engine.

Most likely time for a kit. Only so much you can do when they get to that point. I have a Farmall C that fouls number 4 plug if I don't run Seafoam in the gas and oil. I don't use much and it always needs a dose when I start using it each spring.  I clean the plug or put in a new one and she will work up to where it should.
