A backhoe showed up in my yard Sat,it runs and hoe seems to work. It is a 2010 JD tractor with industrial yellow paint on the whole thing with the dealer stickers from that time of the local Cat and JD dealer in a number of places so the yellow is original color.
I want to know about power steering ,not even sure it has it. If it does where would the filler for adding oil be? The rest of the story. Have a good friend that can make anything run if anybody can,at least the old non computer stuff anyway. Has been the go to guy if you want to have a tractor hauled off, when the price of scrap was so low. So widow woman wanted this hoe to go away, had no been run in over 10 years maybe as long as 15. All 4 tires where flat but holding air now. Put a battery in and gave it a little go juice and the diesel fired up ![]() Have no knowledge ![]() Yes

2010 should have power steering, it was standard equipment. It runs off the same pump as the hydraulics. I think the filter is under a plate on the right side of the transmition.

The 2010 was a Dubuque tractor and has a reputation of being one of the worst Deere ever built. It should be practical on epay or a Deere dealer to acquire shop manual, operating manual, and parts book.

Yes I have known 2010 was not one people are really looking for. There was fella that liked the popping Johnny's and bought a 2010 in the day.Was making a lot of hay and New Holland was the equipment to run for that and the NH dealer was also AC dealer here. Was talked into a D19 to replace the 2010 and never bought another JD tractor, but at least 8 new AC's over the years as well as a hand full of Gleaners. He was born and raised in Beatrice Ne,and could hold his own in the shenanigan department too. Must be something in the air or maybe snow back there.
Anyway I was being real frugal (cheap)and didn't want to buy books if I end up cutting the whole mess for scrap. But if it runs it will dig even without power steering.

So I take it the steering is extremely difficult? It should have PS, and runs off system hydraulics.....but if it isn't working, could be in the valves and such, can be difficult to make right but doable. I don't know how to do it though.
Guys, he said "filler", not "filter". Adding oil should just be at the rear of the tractor.

Now that is what I call a deal. I wouldn't care if it was passionate pink if it saved me from having to use a pick and shovel.

2010 was back, after cat had taught JD how to cast a modern motor. Notorious for ring problems, some of the early ones left the factory minus a ring or 4. Cat made the deal, with mother deer, for teaching deere to make a 4 cyl, deere was supposed to stay out of the construction machinery biz. Cat got skrewed...

I don't know what kind of "stesering" valve the 2010 uses... We have a CASE 530 and there is a rotary valve on the steering wheel base that directs oil to two steering cylinders.. When it sat for several years, the valve was dry and I had to turn the wheel several turns left- right- left - stop to stop to get the system purged of all the air and start working proper.

Is the engine in the 2010 part of the better idea family that was a total failure ? All the wet sleeves are part of a header plate. Been there done that with a JD 248 diesel in a 95H combine with a 6 cylinder local known as 6 pack engines. By some miracle they lasted 10 years in a combine and after that 2 short seasons was considered doing good no matter how or who rebuilt it.

I don't know if this tractor is worth the time. Engine oil had a lot of water in it.After drained put water in radiator and drip out of crank case got faster. Will see what "magic juice" I can find, see if it keeps water from oil.
Maybe Joe wants another backhoe since the last turned out so good.

Ray, the stuff you want is blue devil block sealer...
Won't work on big leaks, though. you might want to post a video of how bad the leak is...

All four cylinder sleeves are attached to a plate that is held down by the head, which complicates the sealing of the sleeves to the block at the top and at the bottom of the sleeves. Not the greatest engine design, also used in the contemporary 1010 but not in the 1020 and 2020 models following in a few years. Be sure to hunt up an official shop manual, not I&T and finding those engine parts I've heard is difficult.

Thanks for the bad news Gerald J,that is what I wondered. Been there done that with the 6 pack model 248JD in the 95H combine.
IF and that is a BIG IF it comes apart it will get a minim of new parts. Had just as good of luck putting JB weld in the pits in the sleeves on o ring grove as guys putting everything new in. IF I am remembering Chevy small block valve keeper as JD would drop a valve besides all the other bad things. I think the shop manual for the 248 may still be around.

Its crucial for JD o-rings to use the proper lubricant. As I remember a soap, not grease or oil because they don't survive petroleum products. Probably different for different positions. My '68 4020 has three o-rings per sleeve, the top two see only coolant, the bottom one sees coolant and crankcase oil, so are made of different materials.
