I got a D 15 II starter that has been apart for a quople of years and I am in the process of restoration. Question is on the drive gear rotating down/back out of the ring gear. This one will only rotte 1/4 inch and it seems to hit a stop with 1 inch of the large threads showing betwween the spring assy and the front part/gear assembly of the drive. shoudn't the gear rotate freely back until it hits the spring assy? looks to me like the way it is the gear would stay in the ring gear?

the new gears will not retract as you think motor only will do it unless you have a fast grinder
