I recently purchased a 1967 I610 Diesel Backhoe, the injector pump was rebuilt, starter replaced, the engine runs good but its hard starting and requires ether to get it running. The injector pump was set by listening to engine and mechanic said the timing may need minor adjustment to improve starting. Diesel engines are new to me, good in gas engines. Need help to adjust timing so I can get to work with this unit. Also the manifold preheater is bad, but was told they don't work well and not replace, comments?

Never heard of an I610. Can you post pictures? Hard starting can be caused by other things - poor compression especially.
Whoever told you about the manifold heaters not working is wrong. They work very well and are much better for the engine than ether. Keep it on for a 75 count on a day that is around freezing and it will start up. Just make sure your battery is good. |

Somebody had one of them air horn preheaters on here, of late... That's an I-600. If you want it to start easier, put a tank type recirculating preheater on it, and plug it in for a half hour prior to starting... If you want to adjust the pump timing, obtain an engine manual for a D-15 diesel farm tractor, and it'll describe the procedure. Involves loosening the pump, and turning it slightly...
Don't know if its the right part, but here's a link... Edited by DiyDave - 04 May 2016 at 8:23pm |
