I came here because I gots a lawn mower question. I ain;ts never been on here before so if'n you fellas were comin here cause ya couldn't stand my jabbering on that thar varmits page, well jest hang on to yer horses and I be gone from here ina new york minute.
But I got here to post my question, then helped a fella that had an onan issue, so I posted to his problem then left, forgitting apparently why I was thar in the first place! But I posted this on the varmits page and figger I'll put it on here too. cause a lot of guys on the varmits page are kinda like me. Don't know chit. So here goes. Sorry fer it being off color. I took apart a JOHN DEERE mower deck and seen somethin I ain't never seen before. This thing had, (and it;s factory, I might add) 1 inch square fan blades, directly underneath the the belt pulleys. There were two blades underneath each of the 3 pulleys, 180 degrees apart. This 1993 445 JOHN DEERE garden tractor is a first year edition, and sometime during this first year run they discontinued them thar fan blades. They went on to produce this 445 model garden tractor till either 2001 or 2004, I fergit which. Them fan blades were never seen again after those early first year 1993 models. My question. Why did somebody at first think they needed to be there? Two of the 3 are bent up and need to be replaced. Do i jest toss them? They are still available new. An attempt at keeping the area clean? It's a Deere, might be a fire suppression system.

are the spinldes on it the ones that let air through to the bottom of the deck ? has to get air to help make wind to get grass up the chute to the bagger. also alot of commercail guys put two blades on each spindal to cut up the grass finer , honda has used two blades on there push mowers for alot of years

If I read what he wrote right they are fan blades not a second set of mower blades. I would guess to help keep grass clippings out like was said. If you don't replace them will you have to put in a spacer or will everything tighten up ok without a spacer?

I would think, if they are bent , they could cause a balance problem in the spindle. I know some don't think much about balance on a mower deck but if out of whack, it can cause real problems down the line.
Might could just turn em off with a lathe or remove them and put a space in there if needed. I hope that deck is better built than the green one my brother has. His wife mowed the yard last summer right before I came to visit. Evidently, she hit a 2 inch rock the first round because the whole yard was scalped from the left blade, only on the outside edge. He dropped the deck and I put a straight edge on the blades and he couldn't believe how far out of whack they were. We removed that spindle and shimmed with washers of varying sizes till it checked straight and set pretty even on the deck and washers. It mowed good and level after that, but we had 3 washers on the outside mounting bolt for the spindle. |
