here's a hypothetical strategy/tactics question, simplified for discussion, but not that far from the real deal. what would you do?
you are at a pull with a weight transfer sled. speed limit is 6 MPH. you have a choice of which gear to pull in: 1. 2nd gear, run wide open, tractor will run 6 MPH, or 2. 3rd gear, at about 75% RPM tractor will run 6 MPH. Do you run in 2nd, so you have the advantage of the lower gear ratio at the end of the pull as the weight box goes up? or.....do you run in 3rd gear, so you have some more throttle to work with at the end of the pull?? lets assume that its a middle of the road track, not a real grabbing power track.

On a mid way track like you are talking about I would run 3rd. If you start to spin a little you could idle up to maintain the desired 6mph. If you go with 2nd and start to slip you have no more throttle and lose forward momentum and spin out faster.

3rd as long as you have the power to increase engine rpms when your tires start slipping.
