The rims are shot. The axle seal is leaking. I couldn't take it anymore. Up on stands it went and off came the rims and final drive pans. Is the outer bearing supposed to be a press fit on the axle? When I pulled the axle out, the seal and bearibng came with it? Normal?

Yep, the outer axle bearing cone presses on the axle and the cup or race drives into the housing.  Putting it back together and getting the seal into the housing is a trick.

Is there a shoulder or a stop on the axel? How do you know how far to press on the bearing?

If I remember right the seal goes on - probably need a speedy sleeve to cover the groove worn on the axle from the old seal - then the outer bearing cone goes on against a shoulder.  I put the axle in and got it snugged up against the inner bearing, then pried the seal into place by driving chisels between the axle flange and the seal.

Unfortunately I did not take any pictures of this process when I did it a couple of years ago.
