I have a WD that came to me partially disassembled. I need to resinstall the governor assembly. Are there supposed to be marks to line up the gear on the governor assembly with the gear in the block properly? I can't seem to see any.
Also, I bought a WD manual, but when it came today it only covered timing for the later distributor models. Can anyone give me the instructions for timing the WD magneto? Thanks very much, and have a blessed Easter. Neil in MD 1949 Allis WD 1947 Allis B |

There is a web site that covers this, I'll see if I can find it, but, I don't think there are marks on the gears. Set the motor to the F marke on flywheel on compression stroke of no.1 cylinder. Then you install mag set so rotor is at no 1 position.
Hopefully, someone can fill in the rest, 'cause I can't remember.

To set the governor gear correct the slot for mounting the mag needs to
be horizontal when any of the pistons are
at TDC. Since this turns at crankshaft speed you'll see by turning the
engine with the hand crank that no matter which pistons 1&4 or
2&3 are at TDC the slot will always be horizontal
when one set is up. The mags for these all impulse fire on the horizontal, then once up to speed the impulse
coupler doesn't come into play and the spark is advanced to the proper
fire mark. Make sure that you have the crankshaft on TDC though, look
either at the mark on the flywheel or look at the set-screw on the front
crankshaft pulley it will be pointing straight down when 1&4 are at
TDC (WC not sure what the pulley looks like on a WD). Since the pistons dwell at the top for quite a few degrees just
looking at the pistons isn't good enough.
