i know this is off base but a lot of mechanical knowledge on here. about a month ago i had my mechanic change the valve cover gaskets on my 99 ford ranger 4 liter 6 cylinder. ever since when it's wet out it won't start. turns over fine but no fire. i took it back and it set at his shop for 5 days but would always start. rained yesterday and wouldn't start again. dried up this morning and started fine.??? any suggestions??? have had this truck for 11 years and has never failed to start. 205,000 miles and just a work truck but love it and want to keep it.

You might try a water bottle and mist the plug wires and distributor cap while it is running to see if it starts to stumble.

I will second the ignition related
response. Usually a moisture related no start comes down to Spark plug
wires. Can also be dist cap, but I believe a '99 has the ignition module
with the wires plugging in there. Easy test when it is dry and running,
use a spray bottle with water and squirt the area of the spark plug
wires, if there is an issue you will get a good light show.

Not positive, but I was thinking that they have coil packs in them. 98 explorer does, and that was the first thing that went out on us.--developed the might start, no start thingy.

ya'll already know what i'd say on this...however...me being the nice guy I is, I had a Dodge that would do the same thing until...one nice dry day I bought a can of spray sealer, and sprayed the entire cap and all the plug wires with it. had to do it about twice a year, but it solved the problem. cheap and easy.

I had a f350 do the same thing. Never did figure it out. New caps and wires didnt help. What with all the carb problems, I just sold it.

Dang it, I even googled ‘99 ranger distributor cap before I posted, got hits showing 4 and 6 plug wire terminals. I thought google knew everything.

A shot in the dark here, did he get a wire pinched under the valve cover? That happened to me on my old '74 Plymouth. In my case the alternator stopped charging after I put new valve cover gaskets in it. Found there was a little wire that got pinched under the cover when it was tightened down and it was intermittently grounding out because the insulation was cut through. Not likely in your case but anything's possible.
