Fav son found an old generator buried in the dirt way back in the woods . Just curious as to what it came off ? Found 21 A 42 10139 on it , which seems to have been on a 1940ish Ford flathead car . Probably have pics up soon . Anyone have a clue ? Thanks !

http://www.allfordparts.com/
again... click on this link and it will appear in the link bar at the top of the page... delete the %20 in the link and hit ENTER... you will be at the ALL FORDPARTS page.. go to page #7 for a drawing of the old generator............ and for some reason that site does NOT want to link... here is a screen shot.. The field coils were originally wrapped in a cloth material to insulate them from the body of the generator. It tends To come apart over time in conditions such as you found that one!

The sad thing is I have TWO of them, in 'ok' condition in the garage attic...... they'll have to 'go to China' as I was told my stuff next door HAS to be removed...

That long mounting bracket allowed it to be moved up or down to adjust the tension on the V-belt that went around the crankshaft pulley, the water pumps on each side of the 'V' and the generator on the early flat head Ford engines. I had lots of first hand experience with these engines.

Henry Ford was intelligent and frugal. The first V8 engines were largely based on the castings for the model A flat head four. One side was mounted at 45 degrees and the second side was essentially a mirror image of the model A casting mount 45 degrees the other way and offset by the thickness of a connecting rod.
