There's a new product on TV that looks to be something us shade tree'ers might be able to use as a great tool,,,,, The new thingie is called " FIXED" and is bout the size of a match box and plugs into the diagnostic port on cars and trks. Then you upload to your smart phone via USB and the engine, transmission or electrical codes info will transfer to your phone with the recommended repairs,,,,,, If this is a legit tool,,,It will save having to buy those super expensive OBD code readers. Too many times I turn down jobs simply because I don't want to pay what they want for them sobs. The good OBD readers are $300 plus,,,, This little "FIXD" tool costs $35,,,,and,,,,and,,,you just go right ahead and say it,,Shameless,, Has anybody tried one,,??

I had computer updated OBD tooling, did not have to need to keep it updated so let it die then sold the machine on fleabay. The machine was basically a handheld PC, it read the parameters, showed the codes and data streams, could even record what a system was doing during a flare or foul up while driving. My cost 1994 $$ $296, newer systems are closer to $600, for the better ones. As to telling you what to fix that is BS. Can tell you a code but then a Pre-loaded pop-up that says change EGR or O2 sensor is not actually diagnosing the problem. These are money grabs for the parts sellers as once a electrical or electronic device is installed, is yours no warranty. A Silica poisoned O2 sensor will code out as bad to the cheap device, a Vacuum leak will trigger as a bad O2 sensor or Manifold Pressure sensor not a leak, that takes a mechanic.

I bought the second cheapest OBD2 reader that HF had, and it reads direct, and can erase codes, comes with a book that has all the codes in it. also came with a disc, but I never used the disc. Anyway it cost about 30-35 bucks...

cheapest OBD2 'tool' is about 6 Canucks !! talks to PC via bluetooth( or smart device). I made my own, hardwired to PC in 2000. Have a $30 handheld to reset the idiot light on the CRV(good O2 sensor..BAD CPU). scanners are great at telling you a POSSIBLE fault...but can't truly say 'ign coil #5 IS BAD'. They could...but ..won't. I'd be very, very leary about the phone ap..most aps upload YOUR private data(like GPS,logs, photos, etc.) to 'them'....all legal cuse YOU clicked OK to the Terms of use.... |

I was wondering about them also. I have had problems with my Power Stroke and plugged my brothers generic code reader in to find no codes.
I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for something that can at least point me in the direction of the problem, just don't know how to weed out the BS from the useful. |

Got an OBDII reader. Paid about $75 for it. Will read most codes except ABS codes. It has helped me many times to point me in a direction. Sometimes a vage direction and sometimes specific. It think it is pretty darn handy.

That's fine, IF you can get the vehicle to their parking lot. It don't help if the thing won't start and it's sitting in our driveway |

The cheaper "GENERIC" code readers will normally erase the codes also... CHEAPEST will do most USA cars.. Mid cost will also do EUROPE /Jap made cars... they are a little different for some reason.. More expensive units might also do the ABS codes....... READ what the scanner does BEFORE you buy.. I believe there is a DIESEL version and the GENERIC readers don't work on the DIESEL units.
A simple code would be like PO305 ....... that means "misfire on #5 cylinder. that can be a bad coil, bad spark plug, or no fuel injected ..... if you get a SECOND code that might help narrow it down, but otherwise, you just get an IDEA of the problem.

This is one that cost $100. and in addition to the above, it does ABS, Air Bag , Brake problems, and will capture data at a point in time ( collect 100 input values, etc and display).
