It’s gonna take some getting used to.
Not sure how I feel about this so far.
Maybe after they’re broke in.

When my Dad first got his hearing aids many moons ago he was unimpressed, and felt about the same way. Up until Saturday morning when he didn't have to go to work and was able to hear the birds singing he had missed for years. That first weekend convinced him the "damned things are worth it". I have a feeling I will be getting some before too much longer.

I have had mine for a while... more than a couple months, less than a year.
I have to admit in the beginning there were times when I wondered why i was 'putting up with them' cause I did not think they were doing that much ... ... then there are times when I clearly recognize that they are working to help me hear that soft spoken person, or a speaker that is not projecting their voice.   And there are times when I have to turn them off, like in the wind, or in a crowded restaurant...
So i guess my advice is, hang in there and find out the positive and negative and use this new friend in your ear to your advantage.

I hope you have good luck with them Thad.

They say hearing loss is a contributor to dementia.  It sort of makes sense if you think about it, less and less true interaction, information received from the world, etc.  I see it in my mom.  It's funny/ not funny in a way.  She went for a long time without hearing aids, then "cheap ones" that helped a little but not so great, and just a few weeks ago got some really expensive ones but work very well. (HEY!  I heard the toaster ding! )  A week before she got them, I came in the back door of my parent's house after finishing the feeding. Hear mom sobbing, tail end of an argument with dad, because he yelled at her so loud.  He says well you don't hear if I talk normally, so I raised my voice.  No, you yelled!  (I'm in the back room taking my work duds off, thinking what a pointless argument!)  Anyway, just last weekend, we're at lunch, she says something to dad which he didn't quite catch, so he asks, "What did you say?"  She got the most angry disgusted look on her face, snaps his head off about what she said!  Hahahaha.....I said to her, "Wow!  For someone who was so hard of hearing for so long, you sure have 0 patience for someone who didn't hear you."

That's a weird part of human psyche I wish we could change, that it makes people SO ANGRY when somebody doesn't hear.  I'm often guilty of it too.

Did you get basic amplifier aids or did a Audiologist set them up for specific frequencies?

Simple Amps work for a short time then run out of ability to increase volume enough as deafen their wearer just by making noises louder and right into the ear.

So they did do a Hearing Exam and determined frequency band of losses?  Or did a series of simple exams and sold you a $350 pair of amplifiers?  Hateful to say if did the latter spent good money after bad.

I spent two visits thru a Hearing test booth, validated first exam with second, my aids do not amplify full range only those levels of frequency I could not hear.  They also mask my Tinnitus.

I have had mine for 5 years and my first ones I had to replace batteries, seems like I was doing it all the time.  I now have new ones that are rechargeable, take them out at night, put them in the charger, and next morning put them in and away we go. I also can run my TV through my hearing aids, slick deal also.

My own are rechargeable, my phone works thru them., pretty much anything that can Bluetooth can be connected to them.  Part of the frequency adjustment is done with a laptop, final narrowing and establishing the absolute baseline adjustment for range was done on my phone then logged into the Audiology department frame.  That way if I damage one the next would respond just as the one I destroyed.  Mine will be three years in use this coming fall.

Also did more than one test and both (from different places) came back very similar.
These are programmed to my ears and programmed to my iPhone.
I’m not used to them yet and still learning to operate them.
They really aren’t a lot louder just in areas.
When they first fitted them I felt like I was talking loud.
I can hear my knee pop often and hear every creak and pop my old work truck makes.
I can sure hear paper being crinkled.
I’ve had them in since 4:30 am with no problems so far.

I could have had mine to 'adjust' with my phone but decided to use the buttons on the aids, so as not to have to bother with the phone every time i want to change 'hearing power'. there are 3 levels and sometimes I do use the stronger power if i am with someone who speaks softly and there is no other noise to compete with. peace

I have been wearing hearing aids for over 15 year and started with the ones that just go in your ear and then the over the ear ones. Most hearing aids have a guarantee of around 3 years . The ones I have now are from Uncle Sam and I am had them around 8 month and am going in next Wednesday for a re-exman because I can no longer hear the birds and don't hear any difference when I take them out.

Thad, sounds as received good ones, know all too many that went cheap and ended up worse off in a year with the stupid amplifiers.

My first missed noise was Cicadas singing as I left with my New Aids in, been a good deal for me and allow me to keep my CDL.

Do you constantly hear locusts/cicadas?
I been hearing them for years. I don’t hear them with the hearing aids in but reading this tonight without them I’m hearing the locusts and ringing.
Will this go away with time or just when the aids are in?

What I meant was had not heard cicadas singing for a few years, got aids stepped outside and they were back, had been there all along just could not hear them.

I have had tinnitus for forever, my own reduces as I wear the aids where I can hear conversations or the buzzers on oven dryer or wash machine with aids in and are gone with aids out as the ringing is same frequency. Take my aids out and it is still there just masked with aids in.

Got ya.
My tinnitus is a constant sound of locusts/ ringing.
I also notice it goes away with the aids in.
They seemed much less bothersome the second day.
Funny thing, I came home from work as my wife was getting ready for work. I wondered why she had the tv up so loud?
Some things seem normal to me but like you say, beeps and high pitch sounds I haven’t been able to hear or soft spoken people.
They seem perfectly normal outside but a little odd in small enclosed places.

I have gotten up and put them in each morning. They seem less bothersome.
Yesterday morning was quite enjoyable hearing all the critters.
I don’t like them turned up very high.
Seems each morning when I put them in they go to the loudest setting.
I turn them down and good to go.

Had that issue initially with mine, had the Audiology tech reset them at a lower base line and good to go without having to readjust every day.

I think I’ll go visit them and have this done as well. Was told I may need to at the beginning.

It never goes away... sadly I have those very loud sirens going off in my ears too.  I've tried alot of things to lessen it but was a big waste of $$.  Once those nerves are damaged, it's done, fat lady sang on the ears.

I control my h/aids through my cell phone app.  There are *noise* settings that claim to lesson the sirens and they do to a point but I have to turn up the *white noise* so loud its very distracting albeit a different frequency so that in it's self is a nice treat every so often.

Other than that, I love my h/aids!  I can work and listen to my choice of music, hear my phone calls more clearly but, it really does not make understanding a spoke word/sentence any easier as it also brings up the level of any noise in your environment.  In a noisy environment, I can turn my volume to zero and it does give me a limited amount of environmental noise suppression but that is part is from the very loud sirens.  Things need to be pretty loud to be heard over those.

My h/aids are cell phone controllable, it has several settings.  A couple are wind and one for restaurants.  I use those settings in those environments and it actually does help alot.  Can you check/see if your brand has cell phone control apps?

My aids are Resound brand, from the VA.

Thad,
Good thread. Thanks!
I have had my new ears since 3-11 22. Sill learning about them too. I believe they have reduced my tinnitus by maybe 50%.
Increased my ability to hear small noises that were not heard before, small very small details!
Was told by the hearing tester that mine will ramp from 60% to 100% in about 6 weeks.
Also he mentioned that if hearing loss goes too long the human brain can become to think the jumbled words are the correct language, and turning up the volume doesn't help a person with severe long term hearing loss to understand spoken words. That sure was news to me.
So I am trying to wear mine all day. Sometimes forgetting to put them in the mornings. I have the chargeable type too.
The wife said I could not hear her. She was somewhat correct, I can hear better now!:)
Just trying to maintain at 70!
Regards,
 Chris
